Oh dear I seem to have started a row here.
I think you need to blame me for giving insufficient information in the first place and forcing people to guess or make assumptions. I'm pretty sure the hot water tank is heated by natural circulation through 28mm pipework. The pump circulates water through the radiators and there is no 3-way valve.
All is working well now and I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to post replies to help me solve the problem.0
