even the "experts" as you put it need to know what they are suppost to be trying to fault find.
so OP i suggest you ignore posts 6,8,9,10 until you can post more info as to your system
OP states that he has 'large pipes' feeding the cylinder from a Potterton RS50 floor standing boiler which was a replacement for a solid fuel one. That alone is sufficient to give a clue as to the age and type of the system. An air lock or water shortage would be a perfectly reasonable diagnosis to start with. Although, in the case of a water shortage, I would expect the upstairs radiators to be effected and unbleedable.(depending on relative height to the cylinder) If the OP investigates the points made in post 8, he will be a lot closer to solving the problem or providing further information .
Anyone discussing diverter valves at this moment is only throwing confusion into the mix.0 -
Thank you everyone who has replied and apologies for not giving enough information.
I think the problem is solved and as plumb1 suggested in post 8 the ball !!!! in the header tank had stuck closed. Pushing this down allowed the system to refill. Can this be lubricated or helped to operate more freely or would it be best to replace it?
Thanks again for all of the help and suggestions.0 -
Motors gone on the 3 port valve, easy DIY fix to replace you just need the make and model; go to a good plumbers merchant or ebay to get a new one.
Good video here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yyn_fBEH90U
Ahemmmmmm, :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:, dam I got it wrong again dad:D:DI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
If its generally gummed up with limescale then taking it apart and cleaning it will cost you more in time than replacing it. Make sure you fit a Part 2 valve though.Thank you everyone who has replied and apologies for not giving enough information.

assumption is the mother of all evils, the larger pipes could have been left in & used for a fully pumped system, i agree that the first port of call would be to check the header tank however the rest of post 8 was pure speculation & if the OP had started undoing things on the cylinder then he could have had a major leak if things went wrong, then he could have also had problems if he had tried to drain the system what would have happened if the roof tank was full & the cold feed was blocked it would have stayed full but the system would have been empty then he wouldn't have anything working, so the divertor valve suggestion was as valid as any of the others as none of us had any of the info we needed to make an informed dianoisesI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -

Ar so my polished crystal balls are no good eh? And calling me stupid is not very helpful.
I just read between the lines. Old Potterton Kingfisher replace a solid flue boiler, 90% of the time they are 28mm circs on gravity. The OP said they couldn't see a MV .A thankyou is payment enough .0 -

It's called logical thought coupled with experience. Something that some 'experts' are evidently short of0 -

firstly i didn't call you stupid, i said your reply was stupid which it was, you gave three possible problems one of which was right the other two could have caused the OP to have water flowing everywhere if he didn't have a primatic cylinder & started un-doing things that he shouldn't with water in the system, if the cold feed was blocked then they wouldn't have had any heating or hotwater had they drained the systemhappybiker wrote: »

it's got nothing to do with logical thought or experience, without the correct information both of you could have caused the OP major problems but on this occassion you had a "lucky" guess, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerious thing & in this case a little bit of info could have been even worse, i would rather not comment if i don't know or i don't have enough info rather than giving the wrong advice & then have slippery shoulders, which of course doesn't apply to anyone on here does it ?I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

:rotfl:Back to corrie then :rotfl:
To much guess work on here anyway, it can be dangerous
As blowing the seal on a Primatic can be and mixing dirty water with DHW?
Basically none of you actually know your guess was right other than the F&E tank was dry as the OP doesnt either and didnt say as he doesnt know what he has got?
Throw the Crystal Balls away and keep playin with yer own til you actually have some POSITIVE information :TSignature removed0 -
