Changing the OS back to XP just to solve a router issue is frankly absurd, and I doubt that Vista is the issue anyway.
As I pointed out, a working router will cost from zero to a tenner. Not familiar with that Belkin, so what does a red light indicate? If it's fried, then no point in wasting time with it-swap it out. 213 of these on ebay tonight:

I suggested that as my modem works with XP but not Vista - at least I could get online.
Is another router going to make any difference? Will I not just have the same issues as now if the settings won't work?
I don't think it's the router, I think it's something on the PC not set right that's blocking the router from accessing the internet.
The routers lights are all on, just the internet connection one is red.
I've been given a Netgear wireless n-300 usb adaptor - my pc recognises it and says i'm connected wirelessly but still nothing loads up.
This other connection at 100mbps is still there, I have no idea what it is.
I've been on the phone to brother in law who is in IT - he's baffled too but can't get to me until a week tomorrow.0 -
If the internet light on the router is red then its not connecting/logging in to with the exchange.
Is it plugged directly in the master phone socket with nothing else connected?
The router is independent of your PC once set up it works independently.
The 100 Mbps connection that you can see is the speed of the Ethernet link between the PC and the router. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
It's not a PC -router issue, otherwise you could not access the router's configuration pages. It's the WAN (router to exchange side), which is why you have a red light on the internet LED-it can't synch to the exchange.
Assuming your line is OK, it's therefore a router problem.
Absolutely any ADSL modem/router will work the same with XP/Vista/W7/Mac OS, the device is entirely independent of the operating system, and nothing on the PC is blocking it.
The point is to eliminate each possible area in turn, and the next (and final) step is to swap out the router, which will doubtless solve the issue. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

It's connected via a microfilter - is that not right? No phone is connected. Please don't tell me I have the wrong lead?
Thanks for explaining the 100mbps thing. I was thinking that was some sort of internet connection.0 -
That is correct, sometimes folks plug one microfilter into another which blocks the broadband signal. Or use an extension which is fed via a filter. If its plugged in the same way as your old modem then that bit at least is OK.That gum you like is coming back in style.0

If you have no phone connected, you don't need an ADSL filter-the filter filters the phone, not the broadband.
However, plugging it through a filter will not matter, as long as the filter is functioning. If in doubt, simply retest without the filter.
But given what you've already told us, it will make no difference.
It would have speeded things up if you'd mentioned the red internet light earlier than 23 posts in...No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I will get another router then and hope it's not my settings that are wrong or something on my PC is not allowing access - i've nevr used Vista, so i'm completely lost. That is correct, sometimes folks plug one microfilter into another which blocks the broadband signal. Yes, i've got that bit right then!If you have no phone connected, you don't need an ADSL filter-the filter filters the phone, not the broadband.

It's a different connection, the end of the router phone line and a nornal phoneline?
Either way, you say it doesn't matter. Looks like a new router. I'd like one quick so may pop out and get one tomorrow. It is payday after all.0 -
Or do it the MSE way and ask your ISP for one FOC...No free lunch, and no free laptop0
