Hey all,
I have been trying to figure what my bills will cost me and my girlfriend when we move out of halls at university and I noticed the place we was looking at has fibre optic connection available, as well as Virgin cable.
I was pleased as estimated speeds for the house was 61Mb and I have been living with 1Mb at home and 4Mb at university halls. Being a Computer Science I have to have fast internet just because I'm on it all the time.
After looking at all the places I can find that offer fibre they are all 18 month contracts, do any 12 month contracts exist for fibre?

i think in short the answer is no looks like going the way of expensive smartphones for free contracts which now is either 18 or 24 months.
I reckon once everyone is on fibre bear in mind people like sky offering it for £20 a month on the 40m product its all got to give somewhere for them to make money so reckon 18month is fair or you going to have to look at paying more for shorter contract and overtime lengths may come done when everyone is on it but thats going to be 3years away I reckon.0 -
My daughter signed up with Virgin media on a 9 months option aimed at students in her house share. £50 install and £28 a month I think. Not the cheapest but she seems to get a good service and totally moans about our measly 4mb when she is home.
Doesn't seem to be on their website now but I'm sure it will come back in time for the start of the next University year.0 -
I doubt it, since all fibre contracts (except VM cable) are resold BT Wholesale fibre products, and BT presumably impose the same minimum term on their ISP purchasers as on their retail customers.
Fibre is an engineer install, and this, plus the modem cost, has to be recovered across the minimum term.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Virgin do broadband only on a 12 month contract0

Virgin also do Student contracts with a 10 month minimum. As nobody actually gets fibre (its still copper) it's just marketing hype. What they'll call it when we actually GET fibre to the door is anyone's guess.0

They did at the start of the student year. They have done for the past 2 years, so I presume it will available later this year.
My daughter is in a 3 person house share and they have the 30mb service over 9 months.
