    What are your dates?
We stayed in the Donatello hotel a few years ago in June and it was under £100 a night right next to Union square.
Nice and clean and a good cafe across the road for breakfast.

    25th september for 3 nights

Hotel Carlton on Sutter Street is nice..

    http://www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/sanfrancisco/carlton

We stayed there in 2007, 2010 and some friends stayed there while they were over visiting us and wanted a few days in SF in 2011 and never had any problems.. You can walk straight down Sutter to Union Square without any problems both in the day and night. We didn't pay for breakfast as loads of places to pick up a bagel and coffee on the way down to union square. Quite handy for transport links to further a field as well and you get a glass of free wine of an evening which is nice before you head out!

Look at Priceline or Hotwire for some good bargains in the 4* hotels.

Don't get too hung up about the Tenderloin area.

We stayed for a NYE (for $70 per night-Priceline :D) a few years back near the area.
yes there are hobos around but they were not aggressive, some were a little persistent but on the whole nothing to worry about if you're sensible

We stayed in the SW Hotel in Chinatown. Lovely although inconspicuous from the outside, and it came in at under £100 for a night.

Booked the sw hotel £338 then 15% back off quidco. now got to look for car hire then places and hotels to stay on our way to vegas via san diego 11days to do it in any tips and ideas ??

I did this exact trip in November, but we took two weeks over it. What are you into?

In November it was low season, so we didn't bother really booking ahead. Got some good deals online the night before we were due to arrive somewhere, and generally played it by ear.

San Diego is lovely, we had two nights there but I could have spent twice that there easily. And if you're driving from San Diego to Vegas the drive is pretty dull, so you might want to consider flying unless you're set on driving for some reason.

The whole of the coast is lovely and there are some ace spots. We didn't stray too far from the tourist trail and had friends down near LA so they showed us around their patch (Orange County / LA). In my opinion you won't be missing much if you decide to skip LA, but then that's just because the general traffic and hassle of getting anywhere got to me.

If you're into beer make sure you look up a few brewpubs before you go - there seem to be lots along that route so you can enjoy some unusual beers. Same goes for wine country, obviously - there's a good urban wine trail in Santa Monica which means you can enjoy tasting lots of wines without having to drive between wineries.

Embrace Mexican food wholeheartedly, too. The closer we got to the border, the better it seemed to get!

I can recommend the Dolphin Motel in San Diego. We stayed there a couple of years ago and, whilst it is quite basic, it was spotlessly clean and only about £45 a night. San Diego is really lovely, we particularly liked Coronado. We also liked Old Town, it has some good Mexican restaurants.

Where are you thinking of stopping between San Francisco and San Diego? That may help people to give you some accommodation recommendations that will fit in with your trip. It's a great drive down that coast with some stunning scenery.
