Can recommend the Mosser Hotel nr Union Square. I think we paid around $75 for a room with a bathroom a couple of years ago. The rooms are quite small, but the location is brilliant. Just round the corner from the BART stop from/to the airport.0

we stayed at the Renaissance Stanford, Nob Hill, back in 2006, and it was about $100 a night plus taxes.
We booked hotel only via virgin airlines, can often be a way to access better industry rates0 -
I second Hotel Bjou but it was 12years ago.0

It is still good
and it does have it's own built in cinema! Well they are proper cinema seats with a large LCD screen. Apparently they show classic movies shot in San Francisco from time to time 0 -
I can't offer advice about the hotel but would likel to give you a couple of tips about San Francisco. If you are there for any length of time definitely go to Alcatraz, and book the tickets on line before you go it will save loads of time. Also go up Coit Tower, best views over the city...wow. But my best tip is to hire bikes and cycle over the golden gate bridge, they can be hired in fisherman's wharf, feel free to pm me if you like. Cycle to Saucelito and catch the ferry back, this is just the best thing and trust me you don't need to be all that fit lol. Again best to book the cycle hire in advance. Hope you have a brilliant time, sounds like you will.

Is the BART a train or tram transfer to the airport. Can you remember how much one way.0 -
The BART is a train, very handy if your hotel is on Market St. I stayed in the Hotel Whitcomb 3 years ago, pretty basic but clean and tidy. I'm heading back this year and staying in the Harbor Court Hotel down near the embarcadero.0

On my first trip to San Francisco we stayed in the Grant Plaza hotel in Chinatown. It was very well located and while not in any way opulent it was clean.
Seems to be mixed on Tripadvisor but rooms less than $100 which is great for a central hotel.
Just seen grant plaza on booking.com for £250 looks best bet up to now. Seen some good ones at cheaper prices but close to tenderloin area .0 -
About 3 years ago we stayed at the Club Quarters in the Embarcadero area, this was booked through Hotwire.com at around $60 per night from memory. Lovely little place with a English style pub next door if you like that kind of thing!0

What are your dates?
We stayed in the Donatello hotel a few years ago in June and it was under £100 a night right next to Union square.
Nice and clean and a good cafe across the road for breakfast.0
