GD and pinkfluff we have had our discussion and that is done now, however you do really need to look at the overall situation. You are intelligent people, if you are being overcharged for your borrowing or banking then there is always someone else on the market with a better deal...and free banking!! I believe that reclaiming charges will be a short term fix and the banks will find a way to fight back, but they ARE putting people into poverty. Your business could easily go down the tubes as many small and successfull businesses do, you shouldn't be so quick to judge!!!
Nope, it's the consumers that put themselves into poverty, not the banks.
I don't go overdrawn or allow cheques to bounce etc, etc, so therefore don't get myself into the situation where I get charged thousands by the bank. It's not rocket science!
I don't see how they are a short term fix as some people have the gall to reclaim their charges for a second time! They obviously don't learn, perhaps they will when banks start closing their accounts?
Please don't encourage personal insults. You have come across well in your posts, don't lower yourself to that x:heart2: Some call it stalking, I call it love:heart2:

We are definitely never going to agree on this!! As I have already said, not everyone has abused the banking system, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it certainly does!!!! But 1 charge that someone can't afford can turn into many more, very quickly! and the banks quite often could be more helpful, not for someone who is constantly overspending, why encourage it? but for those who are in legitimate financial hardship.
As far as short term fix, I mean this won't be going on forever, the banks will eventually fight back, even by lowering the charges, I don't know but it can't go on forever!
For the record I am reclaiming my bank charges and I have a lot to reclaim! and I know to avoid them and have learned my lesson.0 -

I don't know whats sadder, the amount of bickering on this thread or me for having read it all at 2330 on a saturday night! I am now going to stick my neck out and hope my head doesn't get blown off! I THINK that bank charges are ok WITHIN REASON. The banks have a living to make but do sometimes seem to err on the side of extortion. It is definitely not right in anyones book that people who are genuinely in financial trouble should be put in the position of it being made worse thro no fault of their own. But conversely, people who abuse the system should not be let off scott free. The banks should put a little more effort into spotting the different types and treating them accordingly which would then gain our admiration rather than our wrath. It is all a matter of balance and fairness.Proud to have dealt with my debts. Nerd number 288:j Debt free date Dec 07 :EasterBun

Very good question and at last one that needs to be thought about!!!
If the bank charges never existed then If I was going to overspend a little into the red then I probably would! Having said that, the bank are basically taking the mick with the amount they are charging!!!
If the bank charged us £5 to £10, which would still give them profit, I would have still learned my lesson. On the day before payday when I am down to my last tenner(as many of us are) and the bank take that tenner or £5 out of it, I am going to be more cautious next time, cos now I can't lift any money from the ATM and need to switch my bread and milk to last me til I get paid!
The banks need to charge, they are a business and businesses need to make money and cover thier losses, but they are majorly over charging and lets face it, if they weren't overpricing and being completely honest they would not be refunding the charges. Would they?!?!?!;)0 -
Why? Because he's financially dependant and isn't stupid enough to try to live beyond his means?
You keep assuming I live beyond MY means :rotfl: HARDLY
Jealousy isn't an attractive quality btw
How am I jealous? If someone is successful I wish them all the best as I'm sure hard work endeavoured.
I have a very attractive wife, nice house, nice car, good job and great looks. Why should I be jealous?
Laters

They have been overcharging, but they need to have some method of trying to bring folk into line. If people can just keep taking money, way beyond what they have in the bank, then the bank would be in a bad situation. The banks are not a charity, and they have rules, which customers agree to when they open accounts.
What they could do is stop providing overdrafts and flexibility, but then we would have more situations of people losing the roof over their heads and not being able to heat their homes and feed their families.
I think in situations were people have gone £2 overdrawn for the sake of a payment being slightly higher than expected, sending them £25 into the red is ridiculous. And it can spiral really badly for folk on the back of one small problem in their lives. But, like anything, there are people out there who are now knowingly mismanaging their money in the knowledge that they can claim it back later on. That is a bad thing, and it will, as usual cause the most problems for the poorest folk in the long term. Not buying unnecessary toiletries 2024 26/53 UU, 25 IN0 -

All they have to do is come up with a fairer system. Still charge but a resonable amount!!! No-one likes to be charged, regardless of the amount, some people I know are in the situation you have described above cos thier benefits and wages paid into the bank are consumed in charges. Quite simply it is not fair, it is unlawful and must be stopped!!!0 -

Maybe a little more blatant than yourself Graham but purposely. I am clarifying what others are certainly going to end up saying??Theres
people like michael who will have sensible discussion on the issue and then people like you who prefer to lower to abuse and attack me for being semi succesful in life...
Michael speaks amicably, upthewall speaks amicably and you don't?? I'm not attacking you for being successfull, No way. I wish you every oppurtunity to succeed and I know it's not easy. Bottom line is I don't like being ripped off by a sooo called trust worthy institution and your defending this to protect free banking!
Quote from yourself:
Also "people not educating themselves" are you one of these people that sit there and read endless paragraphes of T&Cs? It's up to the individual if they want to educate themselves on the complexed banking system. Why should they?? After all, an a/c is opened well before you even read the T&Cs unless you want to sit at your branch for three hours reading through befor you sign!!
Yes, i do read the main parts of the T&C's in any contract. It's what your legally bound to. You don't have to sit a your branch, you can read them online. Wouldn't be very succesful being self employed if I didnt understand a contract. Similarly, wouldnt be very good with finance if I didnt understand the contract of where I chose to hold my money.
I don't read the in's and out's of T&C's BUT I know the basic principles. When more complex situations arise, we as consumers are out of our depths and some times find it extremely dificult to fathom out. I don't read my Virgin media contract but apparently I should "Educate myself"!
Your on a RECLAIM YOUR BANK CHARGES FORUM preaching irresponsibility. Please Graham give it a rest, I don't know why you find this topic fiendishly difficult to comprehend:rolleyes:
