without being condecending you are missing the point, the bank charging me for a missed DD etc I totally agree with! Its just its correct!

What is unlawful is them overcharging me its not allowed!!!! thats the crux of the arguement!!!!
I hadn't missed the point at all - if you had read my previous comments I also believe that the amount they charge is ridiculous and £4 or so is more fair. All I was trying to do was answer your question re: having £9 in your account and the ddr being for £10! We all need to be responsible for our own finances and stop blaming the Banks for our own indiscretions.

First of all I would like to say thank you to Martin Lewis for all the advice he has provided to me over the last week (I am currently in the process of reclaiming £4,000 from Barclays Bank).

Secondly I was absolutely appalled to see messages from people that were disagreeing with people reclaiming their bank charges. Obviously these people have never had to worry about money in their entire lives unlike me and many others who have had to watch the pennies. These people dont realise just how easy it is to get in to debt and when you are facing the choice between paying a bill and eating for a week then you can justify to this forum that is unfair we are reclaiming back OUR MONEY from the banks.

At the height of my debt I asked the bank for help and they did not want to know, all they did was charge me more money for bouncing cheques, direct debits etc. which exasperated the situation and ensured I stayed in this situation. I have only just started getting myself out of it after 5 years of being in severe debt.

Also regarding the point made by someone who said they were paying for us reclaiming our bank charges how can that be?? seeing as if you are in credit in your bank account you are earning interest, so therefore the bank is effectively paying you and if you dont pay bank charges then none of your money is being used to pay for us. Dont forget the bank has admitted to some of those who have already claimed that they are using the bank charge money from people who have not tried to claim to offset the loss.

One more point how many banks this week claimed to have made a loss not a profit???? I cant think of one!!!!
If you knew your were in such financial dire straits why did you continue to write cheques and accept to pay direct debits through your account? In France its illegal to do what you did and you would have been arrested - that would have caused even more problems for you I'm sure. No-one asked you to write the cheques out and you could have paid your direct debits with cash instead. Perhaps if you had spoken to your Bank right at the start you would have received a more sympathetic hearing, to go after you have been using your cheque book and card to obtain funds and then getting charged would have been a better thing to do.

why is it mean? I am merely expressing my opinion I have not said -or would ever say, anything personal to any other poster that would cause offence.

I have to say, its a bit unfair to lay all the blame for this at Martin's door

If everyone took the OP's advice and was careful to avoid bank charges, then the banks would make no money and we would end up with the same situation... who would be responsible then? the OP?
  • Did anyone read Jeremy Clarksons column this weekend? His comments about how the Banks are owned by major Pension companies should certainly strike a chord with some people. I found his point of view really interesting - Martin should have a chat with him - I'd love to be a fly on the wall!!

You just slagged off his television programme, if thats not personal i dont know what is. If you dont agree with it why do you have to be so downright rude about it? If i didnt like it, i sure as heck wouldnt slag it off on his website.

Is this not a country of free speech? I am not the only person on this thread who did not appreciate the programme. I am not in any way shape or form being rude about Martin personally I agree with everything else he does and I do agree that the fees are extortionately high, just because you may not agree with my opinion does not make me wrong, just as much as the fact that I am personally affronted by your attitude. If you don't like it, report me (except you probably already have).
