I have opened it with WINRAR, but there are a load of files ending .sys, .inf, etc.

    Which one do I need?

find the wireless adaptor in device manager, right click, update driver, locate one of the INF files... doesn't really matter which one as it will figure that out.

I tried that, but it only opened a text box. I did eventually managed to save the file and updated from there, despite it telling me my drivers were up to date.

Before I updated I actually got a speed result of 8.6Mbps when my router can only sync at 6Mbps. That was a weird one.

Since updating I've had 4, 2.8, 5.6, 308, 4.6 and 5Mbps so the speeds do seem to be better.

Tried the wireless mouse again and only getting 1.6 and 1.9Mbps so looks like I can't use it.

It's normal to get a higher speed than what your internet connection is.

The wireless adaptor will be reporting the speed of the link between itself and your router. This is completely separate from the speed of the link between your router and the internet.

The wireless mouse is likely a problem as both use the same range of frequencies. Changing channel may help, though since you have neighbours using 11 and 4 the usual 1-6-11 standard wont work. Try channel 7 or channel 13, though your hardware may not allow channel 13.

Edit: Also if some of your nighbours kit has the channel set to auto, then setting yours to channel 11 may force theirs to relocate to 1 or 6 and start competing with the muppet using channel 4.
  • I spend an awful lot of time travelling and more often than not I stay in hotels with either poor or expensive wifi.
Because of this, I did a bit of investigation and ended up buying one of these:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1000mW-USB-WiFi-Alfa-Network-AWUS036H-AWUSO36H-1000-mw-/120521362232?pt=UK_Computing_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item1c0fa20b38

It loots like a bit of a novelty but it works extremely well and often enables me to pick up wifi networks from well over 100m away.
Where my laptop will usually only pick up the hotel wifi, this adaptor will usually show far more networks and will show if they are encrypted or not.
I'm suggesting that you piggyback on other networks without permission, but it will give you a far stronger signal for the hotel setup.

hold on, the speeds you are getting, are you referring to INTERNET speeds (i.e. via a speed test site), or the actual wifi connection speed between the netbook and your router ?? Having such variable internet speeds I can understand, but not such a low and varying wifi connection speed.... may be that you're mixing up the two (completely separate) issues....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

check to see if the mouse you have uses 2.4GHZ

speed tester sites can give spurious results.

I am using this site to check the speed

How do I check the wifi connection speed?
