  • Hi all,

    Re: reporting problems

When reporting problems please can you kindly include the following information? Or as much as possible. It's even worth including this information if you think someone else has already done so. As we do not know how similar your circumstances are to someone else.

    * The name of your internet service provider.
    * Your operating system
    * Your browser and browser version
    * The URL you were visiting when you experienced the problem
    * What you were trying to do? What you typed or clicked?
    * What the issue was? What did you see on the screen? Any error message? As much detail as possible is helpful? Exact wording of error messages is super-helpful .
    * What date and time the problem happened
    * How often it happened (once, twice, repeatedly, all the time?)

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi mattytun,

Thank you for all that helpful information :).

I have done some investigation and have not found any evidence of slowness with our service at this present time. So it could possibly be something else on this occasion?

I notice you are using Firefox and Windows 7. I have been able to replicate some instances of Firefox freezing and causing high CPU. But for me that happens with many sites. Not just this one. But there are some things you can try to make Firefox a bit quicker and more stable in general. I will send you a PM with some suggestions.

Oh, please share! I like Firefox best of any browser I've used, but it does give me grief on a regular basis!

    Hi Savvy_Sue,

The general advice for tackling browser instability is pretty much the same for all popular browsers and involves trying the following:

    * Disable plugins, extensions, and addons.
    * Clear your cache, cookies, and history.
    * Reset your browser to "factory default" settings.

Obviously each of those results in you losing data. So you will want to read about them first. And the results are hit and miss. For example I personally get very bad freezing with Firefox on a large variety of websites. On one computer. On another machine it's perfectly fine! if you wish to engage with other Firefox users the Mozilla support forums are a good place to do so :).

Thanks, I did the cache, cookies and history the other day, but earlier today I had some more '404' faults. So I've disabled addons, and we'll see a) what that does and b) if it helps ...

I'm just wondering what exactly does a "404 fault" look like for you? What did you see on the screen exactly? What was the actual error message text? Was the error page a formatted MSE error page? What were you doing when you experienced the problem? What did you type or click? What URL were you trying to access? Also what time did the problem happen and how often? Was it once, twice, repeatedly, or all the time?

Any more information you can give me, might help. If you can't recall then if you could make a note next time it happens that would be great. Thank you :).

It's been a while, and it hasn't been a problem free while either, but much better. And of course one of the problems is that if I'm having problems, I can't actually post on this thread either, but ...

Today, the MSE usercp page loaded when I first fired up Firefox, and I was able to access the recently updated threads. Then I shut the lid on the netbook and went and had my lunch.

When I came back I refreshed the MSE usercp page, and got a 'pandadomain' message - fairy nuff, panda's my virus solution so that can be 'sensitive' at times. I get
in the browser address bar and
Sorry, we can't find "www.forums.moneysavingexpert.com/". Please check the spelling of the web address.
Followed by a load of links for suggested searches.

No problem, I thought, so I went to the main MSE page and tried to access the Forum from there. What I get though is
    forums.moneysavingexpert.com
showing in the browser address bar, and
No site configured at this address
    on the page. Nothing else.

So, how did I get here? I knew I had some email updates on threads, so I went to one of them with no problem, and from there I can get to the usercp page fine.

As before, it's Virgin, Windows XP on a netbook, but currently Firefox 18.0.2 and I'm just downloading another update ...
