Having received the letter today i have transfered two direct debits from Santander to my Halifax account-EDf energy and TV license. The latter you can change on line.I don't think you need to pay salary into the account just the required minimum amount of money into the account.
The TV licence DD will need to be paid monthly if it is to qualify.

You definitely do not have to pay salary into the account just £750pm but it may need to be paid in from external accounts (i.e. not sure whether paying into Reward account from Halifax savings will qualify under the new terms.

But it would be, wouldn't it?

I guess you need to watch out for things like council tax and water rates where you only pay 10 or 8 months in the year.

You can pay the TV licence annually by DD.

Maybe but Halifax says the DD have to be active every month so that rules out council tax and the TV licence.

It would help if you followed the thread before commenting. See posts #102 & #103.

I've set up a direct debit in my Tesco account but it hasn't asked me for an amount. Where do I set the monthly amount?

I don't know, Caparn, but it will be at the Tesco end rather than the Halifax end.

The amount and timing of a DD is determined by the recipient who claims the payment. Are you sure you are not confusing a standing order with a direct debit?

Go to Move Money In. You get a form where you select the account to suck from, the amount, the date, and one-off versus regular.

Set the payment date 2 working days ahead. If it says it wants 10 days, it's not ready yet, may as well skip it and try later.
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis

But this will not create a direct debit - it's just an electronic transfer.

To create a direct debit I have always needed to sign, electronically or on paper, an authority for someone, normally a business, to collect unspecified amounts on unspecified dates.

I'm not sure that an individual can "set up" a direct debit.
