DIY kitchen Sockets

People need to understand the difference between Part P of the building regs and Edn 17 of the wiring regs. Part P is only about ensuring that the work done is to the appropriate regs whether by the sparks self certifying or LABC inspecting. I suspect the truth is that TPTB have woken up to the fact that there is so much private work going on as to make the present restrictions as regards notification under Part P unworkable. So the course of least resistance is to relax the requirement.
Notwithstanding this any electrical work whether DIY or not should still 100% comply with Edn 17. A lot of it will by accident rather than design but some of it won't. Policing that is an entirely different matter and as SCRGI says does relaxing Part P make 60M peeps into sparkys? No it doesn't. Not for one tiny little microsecond.
Oh and BTW the primary reason for the introduction of Part P was exactly the same as when the Gas Register was first introduced. To drive the incompetant cowboys doing dangerous work for reward out of the market.

I agree with the sentiment, but suspect this is what really happens....
"To drive the incompetant cowboys doing dangerous work underground, into the black economy!"
It's all well and good making laws, trying to shackle 99% of the good citizens of society, but pointless when the individuals it is really aimed at already stick two fingers up to society! They won't take any notice anyway. :cool:0 -

Exactly. I am sure there are people who have avoided dealing with issues with their installations, in order not to get tangled up in the Part P process, whereas in the old days, they would have done their research in the local library and gone on to eliminate some real safety issues.I agree with the sentiment, but suspect this is what really happens....
