First off your home hub should be plugged directly into your master socket, not on the end of an extension cable. Second you state you have a cordless base station plugged into the back of the home hub. Its highly lightly that this is causing interference with you wifi signal.
The idea with inSSIDer is taht you load it up on your laptop and use it to scan for wifi signals, if yours is the same as your neighbours you could take steps to change the channel.
I'd ask you to post your router line statistics, its worth it to get a basic idea of whats going on.

Just been told by BT technical department that it cannot be my neighbours hub interferring, he said it is because I am a long way from my nearest exchange which is approx 4 miles ! HE SUGGESTED HE WOULD SUPPLY ME WITH HUB 3 but I will not be able to connect my telephone into the back of this hub so will need to buy an adapter so I can connect my telephone can it get any more difficult.
Now completely confused because the numerous BT technical people I have spoken to have said hub 2 is as good as hub 3 but another man said no hub 3 will solve my problem, todays man said he cannot guarantee it will work because of the distance I am from exchange.
I am paying for a service I cannot get because I am too far from exchange, just not sure what to think any more.0 -

This is complete gobbledegook, the weakness of your wi-fi signals has absolutely nothing to do with your distance from the exchange. The only effect of distance is a slow line, which is not your issue. If it was, an HH3 would not cure it! Follow the advice already given above by penrhyn and work through it. Ignore BT, they do not have any competent 'technical people', as is obvious given the useless advice they have already offered you.
They have failed to ask you to test from the master socket with ethernet, they have failed to ask you to change the wireless channel-all basic user tests that take a few minutes
You have been offered all the necessary info to define and resolve the problem, so why go back and talk to BT?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Sorry it is me being unclear because I am now so confused not sure whats what !!
Basically my laptop can be working in lounge with 3 bar signal strength the suddenly I loose my connection if I walk closer to the hub my connection comes back so does this mean I have wirless problem or internet problem0 -
It would appear to be a wireless issue, but you'll know quite easily if you just retest using ethernet. If the drop-outs cease, then it's purely a wireless issue.

I've had a lot of similar problems in a bungalow with breeze bock internal walls. It wasn't sorted out until I got a new modem from Plusnet (fibre). Just as a thought though, and I know it's very basic, but have you tried raising the height of your modem. It's an old signalman's trick from the army.0

Unplug that coreless phone and test it. That is the most likely problem here apart from a failing wireless card in the laptop.
Anything else sitting close to the hub?0 -
Thanks again everyone phone unplugged will see what happens, no nothing else near hub.
Laptop was sent back under guarantee Oct 2012 because it would not start up unless plugged in and I told them I had wifi problems but they said it tested ok.0
