check with hotel first, insist on refund asap.

How can you refund something that has not debited ????

What it needs is the merchant to REVERSE the authorisation.

If they didnt swipe phone the card issuer to block the payment

If it has already been authorised it cannot be blocked by the card provider.

Yes CapOne tell me who it was and yes they did swipe my card at check in.

Annoying. Hopefully it'll come off soon.
  • Meanwhile I'm an Accor Gold member, but even if I've pre-paid the room and stayed many times previously, they will insist on taking a swipe of the card.

Havent stayed at an Accor brand hotel in a long time but certainly with most hotels it is optional if you want to given them your card or not. If you do they authorise an amount (often some form of daily amount) and you can then charge things to your room. If you chose not to then you must settle each bill as you go and cannot charge back to the room.

Personally I've almost never had a hotel "remember" to charge everything that I've signed back to the room and so the slight inconvenience of a charge being held for a few days is outweighed by a few free drinks/ dinners etc

Thanks. Must admit that I tend not to argue it anymore. The last Accor I used was the Novotel Taipei airport, and they weren't having it.

I'm a skinflint and rarely buy anything from hotels. But I do mention it if they missed something and I've noticed. Kinda would have mixed feelings "getting away with it" especially if the service has been good.

I spend too much time in hotels to worry about going out every night (at the same time I dont spend every night in their restaurant/ bar as that is equally bad). If they forget to put something on the bill for me to sign then I tend to tell them as the individuals tend to be more accountable for them but if I've signed for something and it doesnt appear on the end bill I just leave it most the time.

I often use speedy checkout so dont actually see the final bill for some time and seems a bit daft going back a couple of weeks later saying they've forgotten to bill for something. When I have done face to face checkouts and told them they've missed something they have rarely been thankful, have often taken an age trying to find the missing bill or have asked why I am pointing it out.

The other day I was checking out and the person evidently miss typed into the card machine as rather than billing E1,203.00 they gave it me asking for E12.03. I pointed out that they'd made a mistake and probably wanted to adjust it. Took 5 minutes to explain to them that they were only going to charge 1% of the bill and finally they just grunted, adjusted the machine and gave it back with a sigh and the correct amount. Now, I didnt want a medal for being honest but a thanks would have been nice

The last time I stayed at the hilton the pre auth seemed to take for ever to drop off especially when you need the money.

I always just make sure the card im paying with has now extra funds in the account except for the cost of the hotel to prevent it from happening.

I could be wrong with visa and Mastercard issuers but I know with Amex for example, all pre-auths drop off after the same amount of time if the charge is not settled. I'm almost positive this is the same with any Visa or MC issuer.

The only difference is MasterCard and American Express support authorisation reversal so some merchants can effectively cancel the 'hold' on the card instantly as well (This also happens with some merchants in swipe and sign countries if the cashier/clerk presses no that the signature didn't match, Still MasterCard and Amex only though, Visa USA cards may also support this for online transactions).

No.. but what they don't is take a swipe of your credit card when you walk in to M&S in case you nick something.

Most hotels will not insist on it, provided the room is paid up in full on arrival (not departure) and then of course you pay as you go if you do have drinks/dinner etc.

Also work in hotel management and this has been the case in all the groups I have worked for.

Pre auths will drop off if not used, some hotels suggest using a credit and not debit card, or wont take a pre auth on a visa debit card, as this can lead to issues, particularly if it is getting to the end of the month/money.

I just checked my CapOne account to see 2 charges from Hilton (I stayed there for 3 days over NYE, don't recommend it).

There's one charge, that I expected, from the itemised billing.

But a second payment pending, dated 30 Dec (I checked out 1 Jan) for £50.00.

Anybody know why this is done? Some sort of deposit or something that they'll cancel before it goes through? Or just to authorise the card is valid? (I know other companies have done this with £1, like Pay@Pump).

Don't want to ring them up or CapOne, when it's just going to be cancelled in a day or two?

    Thanks,

I use to work for Hiltons as reception manager, and it does sound like a pre authorisation. Its taken so that if you do a runner they can keep that £50 in your case as they will put a completition through using the code they have obtained. My guess (and this does happen esp if they were busy) is that they have not phoned to cancel it, either as it was missed or the staff couldnt be bothered inputting in info into your profile. SOmetimes they do phone and cancel it but for some reason it hasnt gone through.
I would suggest phoning the hotel as they will pull out your card you filled in and signed on check in, and they will find attached to it your cards pre authorisation slip. They will probably say they have already cancelled it, but insist they phone and cancel it again. It does cancel itself but I cant remember how long that takes (as not worked in hotels for 7 years).
This is just my suggestion but when I worked there I faced this a fair few times, so ask them to cancel it again. Hope this helps:)
