Pending Payment - Hilton Hotel

I just checked my CapOne account to see 2 charges from Hilton (I stayed there for 3 days over NYE, don't recommend it).
There's one charge, that I expected, from the itemised billing.
But a second payment pending, dated 30 Dec (I checked out 1 Jan) for £50.00.
Anybody know why this is done? Some sort of deposit or something that they'll cancel before it goes through? Or just to authorise the card is valid? (I know other companies have done this with £1, like Pay@Pump).
Don't want to ring them up or CapOne, when it's just going to be cancelled in a day or two?
Thanks,

Did they swipe your card when you checked in? If so, then this is a pre-authorisation for any potential room charges. I've stayed at Hilton's many times and they often ask. We've now refused to swipe cards with them now because they can take up to two weeks to release that money back to your account.
As for the hotel itself, depends which one you stayed at. check with hotel first, insist on refund asap.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

If they didnt swipe phone the card issuer to block the payment0

I'm curious how you know the payment pending is Hilton. Does your online access show that information?
As for what to do - just chill out and forget about it, the available credit will correct in time. If you're so close to your credit limit a "bullseye" causes you a problem then Hilton have probably done you favour by putting it out of reachOptimists see a glass half full
Pessimists see a glass half empty
Engineers just see a glass twice the size it needed to be0 -
Hi, i work in a hotel so hopefully can help!
If the receptionist took a swipe of your credit card on check in this will be a pre authorisation - this will be for the cost of the bedroom plus they will hold a little bit extra for any extras you have, such as dinner, drinks, movies etc.
When you check out of the hotel the pre authorisation will be "completed" - so the correct amount will be debited from the amount they were holding.
The remaining funds will be released back onto your card but can sometimes take a few days - the Hilton will not be able to anything about this, its just the time that it takes.
Hope this helps!0 -

This is one of those irritations I've grown used to from large, arrogant hotels.
There are a number of small private hotels I use where they don't ask for anything up front (not even hold a passport) and I happily pay on checkout.
Meanwhile I'm an Accor Gold member, but even if I've pre-paid the room and stayed many times previously, they will insist on taking a swipe of the card. Yes I could empty the minibar or have some sneaky dinners and then run away. But I've never done that in the past and they should know that.
But there is no reasoning with these people and I'm sure all kinds of people do wreck rooms.
So I'm resigned to it - and have bags of spare limit. The amounts do drop off eventually and I've never had a dispute.0 -

You could apply that logic to anyone who commits a crime for the first time - should security guards ignore everyone that has shopped there before?
Even the most regular guests at somewhere like an Accor hotel are nothing more than a number - especially as they give away gold membership to anyone and everyone!0 -
