I think I know where I've been going wrong - trying to approach it in a similar way to knitting. There's a lady at work who's going to show me in person tomorrow, so need to remember to bring my hook and wool in tomorrow. Fingers crossed she'll sort me out!

i crochet like i knit which is totally wrong and probably why i get sore fingers from it but it works. still not learnt to do granny squares but as there are lots of things i can make just going in rounds i am happy :p

Oh no nuttybabe don't say that, I was blaming the knit method for my lack of results! :rotfl: now I'll have to figure out what I'm doing wrong AGAIN! (going to give it another try now, sod the hoovering!)

the first thing i crocheted was a mouse out of eyelash wool  but at least you couldnt see the mistakes :rotfl:. then i tried making a teddy out of brown/green wool that looked like a zombie. took me quite a few attempts to actually get to the point where i was happy with my work. you just need to keep practising. :)

    Something amazing has just happened...
I'VE CRACKED IT

turns out it was nothing to do with doing it like knitting, and totally to do with me doing it completely wrong - I'd made up my own thing! I shall call it Scuff-chet! Everyone else will call it a big knot!!!

I'm so impressed, if I could be bothered I'd have a party, instead I'll just sit here and carry on making what appears to be a scarf for a borrower! :D

Yay! Go scuff! Crochet is addictive, you'll be a pro in no time!

I've decided on my next present - next on my list is my best friend since university (more years ago than I'm going to admit to), and she deserves something lovely. I have some rather nice fabric knocking around, so I was going to make one of these

    http://mmmcrafts.blogspot.co.uk/2009/06/basic-messenger-bag.html?m=1

for her, but patchwork the pieces. I did this before for another friend, and they come out beautifully. This is the last one I did, next one should be similar but with different fabric.

And I've decided my cousin will have to fall by the wayside. We usually just exchange cards, it seems silly to have her on my list when I wouldn't normally buy something...

All the ideas are fab, I'm particularly interested in the foodie ones - sewing and crochet is great, but too time consuming for large amounts of people and come Christmas I'm going to be overwhelmed, I think. Edible presents seem to be the way forward. I got a lovely jar of homemade lemon curd from a friend this year, I might try something similar myself.

Could those of you who have a lot of craft stash that you may not use/need perhaps make up craft kits as gifts for kids?

A 'free' gift as well as using some of your stash, getting rid of things you won't use?
  • Mysk : That's a gorgeous bag! Is it easy to learn to sew? My mother in law can sew very well and has made us some beautiful things, but its something I've never tried!

    Poppy: Great idea :)

I made a teabag wreath this Christmas - fab for the over 40's
    http://www.babysavers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/teabag-and-clothespin-diy-wreath.jpg like this one.
as it has 24 pegs it can be made as an advent calendar too

What did you use as the base of the wreath? Thick card? I can see it would make a great birthday present or maybe a 25th anniversary present. Think I might make a couple.

This is gorgeous! Where did you get the fabric? Please share :)
