I live in walthamstow and often go to Morden as my Dad is there. I prefer Walthamstow. Morden just doesn't inspire me at all. Transport from walthamstow is much better (Morden is zone 4)0 -

Thank you to everyone who posted here.
I will be visiting Walthamstrow, walking up to Highams Park and then Chingford this coming weekend.
I'll post my thoughts back here0 -
I'd avoid walthamstow personally. yes the conservation area is beautiful but I have seen gangs of kids hanging around the bus stop outside the station showing off the goods they have mugged from poor passers by- i know someone who has been beaten up there too- yes ok this can happen anywhere but ive not heard of it in north chingford. id go for north chingford and then look at woodford, south woodford and wanstead. yes they are pricey but if you are patient you can get ex council flats in those areas for £200k which i think are a better bet - location, location, and all that0

Seriously, avoid Walthamstow. Its a dump.
There are nicer parts of it, and Im sure its up and coming as most parts of London are, but overall its a scruffy mess of a place populated by the less desirable elements of society.
It has great transport Links, is relatively central compared to the other places mentioned in this thread, yet is cheap as chips compared to other places - why do you think that is?!0 -
What about East Croydon?
20 mins to central London, and only a few minutes walk or cycle from some lovely countryside

Good luck
Lots of shops on Chingford Mount, but it's not as nice. If you're looking at Chingford, definitely look at North Chingford - which is where Chingford station is - shops on Station Road. A lovely restaurant at the end of Station Road - cross over to The Green (near new Prezzo). It's called Table 7. Not cheap, but very good (in case you want to squeeze a lunch/dinner in!).
