I get the impression that's just a piece of fiction written by a fan on the theme of the Avengers Doesn't mean the concept is necessarily wrong though!

Just reading the question again (#2), do you think it is actually a connection between the Sun and each of the others (Mars, Avengers, US in 1971) (i.e. rather than the Sun and Mars then the other two?

Might support the eclipse idea a little more but I'm trying to find a solid connection to The Avengers. Also, it seems the major eclipse was in 1972, not 1971 in the US.

I've gone ahead and entered with the Disney connection but still am baffled!!

I wouldn't worry about whether the question is linking Sun to Mars, or Sun and Mars to the other items. If you think about it, it's all the same anyway. Regardless we are looking for something that links each of these items.

My thoughts are the same as Lady Inversneckie, I was looking last night and also came up with Joss Whedon.

1) He was a writer on The Avengers 2012.

Regardless, I think I will go for Joss Whedon as my answer for #2. I think it's more likely to be a specific name, rather than something tenuous like an eclipse, because the other questions seem to be that way. For me, The Avengers and Veronica Mars just feel definitive enough to fit in the rest of it.

I stayed with Eclipse in the end as the company Eclipse 35 did some dodgy dealings with Disney last year which was reported in the FT but I've just had a brainwave and it's too flipping late as I didn't take note of the time. I now think the answer to No. 2 is SHIELD. i.e.

There is a huge shield volcano on Mars
S.H.I.E.L.D. is the organization in Avengers 2012 and
I've only just this minute found out that the route shields (road signs) in US were all redesigned and changed in 1971.
