Possible answers to no.2
El Capitan is a rock on Mars
Also the name of the theatre that avengers premiered
Also a train that stopped running in 1971
Sun?0 -
I think Damian Lewis's character in 3b is Nicholas Brody (Homeland) rather than Major Winters - the insignia is US Marine Sergeant - not a US Army Major.
But still possible correct answer for same reason given in post #240 -
Just having a think and getting no nearer to solving Q2. But it's the way the question is worded could be the key. It says "What links the Sun and Mars, The Avengers etc.." rather than "What links the Sun, Mars, The Avengers etc...".
Therein may be the clue but I'm at a loss to find what it is. Anyone any nearer yet?0 -
I'm now thinking ECLIPSE - there was a Mars solar eclipse last year and an eclipse viewed by N Americans in 1970. I know it's not 1971 but maybe it's worth a bit more delving.0

i, personally, don't think the answer would be that obtuse, given the others. Greenoo000 cleverly suggested el capitaine, but it takes a lot or research to get that far, and I'm not sure FT would stretchout to this, though I may be wrong. I've played with idea that the sun might be the newspaper and mars might be confectionary etc gettign no clearer. I do think there is a clever merge of the clues, much like a good crossword, but we are missing a link. Whoever wins the champagne (...if they've bothered with any research rather than just copy our suggestions as above) will deserve a toast !0

Sorry you are not that convinced. I suggest you read about Eclipse 35. I'll say no more....0

Q2 driving me nuts. I could see a link to the eclipse, as well as to the simple fact that mars orbits around the sun and in 1971 the US sent Mariner 9 to orbit mars, but how about the Avengers??0
-
Haven't entered this compo, but a million thanks to everyone who found the answers! A MASSIVE Credit to you all0
-
And I agree, wording is key for Q2, it's first about a link between Sun and Mars...0
-
I suspect the answer for Q3 (ii) is Sgt. Nick Brody but the reason being that both Wooster and Steed fictionally attended Eton.0
