faulty xmas present what do I do.

Hi
I had been very good in saving for 2012 xmas, as I knew kids wanted netbooks & laptop.

End November bought a ASUS ee netbook from Argos, child 1 is only 7 and what they need it for and also to learn to look after their tech.
I didn't think to check it, it stayed in the box within the xmas prezz hiding place. Wrapped and on 28th Dec kids came for xmas child 1 opened, smiled, happy, ran off to set up and use TILL.
They came in crying said the computer has killed the dog? And burnt them? ? Went to check and found dog shocked and perplexed. And the sound of crackling. Child also got a shock due to the charger cable exposing copper wiring and the casing split. Child said netbook won't work also.

Brought back to Argos who won't exchange due no 30 day return for computer products ?????
What do I do? Left with a faulty item and a vet bill :(

What exactly happened? Was the charger cable damaged when it came out of the box, or did the dog chew it and damage it?

Did the dog chew the adapter then?
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • I would Call Child Services and Hand Myself in for any adult that gives an unchecked mains powered item to a 7 year old deserves all they get.

After that I would crawl back into the hole under the bridge.

The Argos 30 day returns policy is to allow people to return unwanted goods. Assuming the damage wasn't caused by the actions of your child or dog, then the item is faulty. I suggest you return to the store and ask to speak to a Manager.

But you have at least a one year's manufacturer warranty from Asus...
That will cover repair or replacement, the safety issue is another matter and between you and Argos, since your contract is with them.
If however the dog chewed the mains cable (you don't really explain what happened), then that is user-inflicted damage and you would have to claim under your household insurance, if it covers such damage.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • No the dog didn't chew. I unwrapped plugged in walked away to child 2 setting up their laptop who are shown how within their tech club at school. Do please don't judge people, I assumed people here were better then that. Moving on. As for cheap charger I've seen worse on expensive gadgets. I wasn't expecting bare wire exposed, sockets are in the floor and dog was laying under table with kids. But my question was Argos won't refund even if faulty as item is not in saleable condition ??? Their words. Do maybe I'll get answer to this question.

This doesn't make sense! Argos know if the product is faulty they have to provide a repair or exchange.

When you returned did you tell them it was faulty?

If Argos suspect that you have damaged the wire, whether intentionally or accidentily, and you dispute this then ask them to send it off for assessment.

If possible upload to this site some pictures of damage.

Otherwise you need to contact consumer direct.

If there's a fault with the product...

    We've made it easier!

If you bring it back to us within 30 days with your proof of purchase*, we'll give you a replacement or a refund.

If you've had the product for up to 1 year, we'll repair the product or, if that's not possible, give you a replacement or, if that's not possible, a refund.

It does sound like the dog's chewed the cable though.
