Hoarding - A New Start

We're thinking about re-carpeting (we rent so a big investment in a house which isn't ours) and I am determined we will use this as a catalyst to de-richard the house. Everything will need to be moved out and I only want things we actually like to come back in!
The discussion did prompt us to make a decision on our piano (old, broken, needs a lot of (expensive) repairs and no-one wants it, even for free). We would need to move it out to recarpet and I said once it goes out it is not coming back.
So we have taken it apart which feels sacrilgeous but as my mum pointed out, it is not fulfilling its purpose and never will again without a lot of time and money being invested - and I'm not even sure we would get any use out of it then.
The hallway looks so much bigger - got a unit I replaced with a chest of drawers moved down to put the printer, router and phone on and now have somewhere to put the paper for the printer too :T
I have now finished up at work so taking some down time to get the house straight - am intending deep cleaning and major de-richarding. Also helping OH with his company, was reconciling his accounts earlier which made me feel useful
Hope to be around much more (evenings only though, need to keep to a "working day" mentality for when I go back to work!)0 -
Would your landlord not recarpet, or bear part of the cost? That would also mean that you would have to definitely do it.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Thanks WW, we will have to ask permission to recarpet. We are however going to ask for assurance that they are not planning on kicking us out any time soon!
The place was re-carpeted before we moved in 5 years but the LL (which is a university) bought the cheapest rubbish-y carpet you can imagine. Beige carpet - we live on a farm!! It has worn really badly. So am reluctant to ask them as we will probably get more of the same!
Our plan is to be here another 2 years at least so we would like to make the place nicer in the meantime by freshening up the paintwork etc.
It was something Byatt said about making her house her home which really struck a cord with me.0 -
Two other items found a new home. My DSis sent me Wenlock and Mandeville cuddly toys for Christmas. Sweet, but cluttering. DGD had Mandeville yesterday, DGS, Wenlock. I'm resisting the temptation to send her a cuddly toy or three for her 64th birthday next month.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... Well went to table top sale again yesterday and another £20+ profit so that was nice. You wouldn't know from the amount of stuff I brought back with me though, my hallway is starting to look like a storage depot:rotfl: think I'm going to have to slow down my decluttering until I get rid of some more stuff. I've also put a bag full out for the charity collection but still have loads left and I've been making use of the neighbours bins for the [STRIKE]absolute rubbish [/STRIKE]unsellable stuff as mine is full:o
Got someone coming to collect some chairs tomorrow and sold more wool from my stash on fleabay.
Had a little mooch up to my landshare garden today where I decluttered some wood for my logburner:D the guy I landshare from is a proper hoarder, he doesn't open his curtains cos he can't get to the windows and there's all manner of everything in his house, he's a lovely guy and he will give stuff away quite happily, but not throw it out... and he takes in all sorts of stuff that might be useful/lovely when it's mended...

Hi all
Saturday was productive on the dericharding front:
2 carrier bags full of clothes from my chest of drawers taken to cs, along with a picture that I'm never going to hang in the house. I can shut the drawers properly now and find things in them without rummaging.
1 carrier bag of clothes not good enough for cs taken to clothes recycling bin.
Yesterday I was able to restart my cross stitch (that I started over 12 months ago) without feeling too much guilt that I could be doing something else, the lounge is clear (paint is finally on the walls :j:j) so I could sit with the TV and do something I enjoy.

For many, many years now I've been getting bullied and tormented by Justin Case
He really knows how to get into your mind and put the fear on you
He has made me hang onto many, many unnecessary things because, you know, if xyz happens and you don't have A then the world is going to crash apart around you!
I am trying to change my behaviours, get rid of those thoughts from my mind, get over the torment, the pain I feel from getting rid of some things, all because of the way just-in-case has made me feel!
It's going to be a long journey, but I'm not going to let him take over me! It's difficult to get over something that has been hanging over you for years!

Hello again,
Enjoyed the virtual cup of tea, mmmm.
Has anyone else found it quite scary to see empty space, even though it is sort of waht de hoarding is meant to create?
After clearing the spice jars, there was a large empty space on the worksurface, and it made me nervous, I had to move a jar over onto it from the other surface. I had a similar moment the other day when there was more space in the living room - so alien to see vast areas with no carp/stuff/bags......
Freaked the other night as emptied the car and space filled with spade, cone kettle, snow shovel, bags of stuff........
Mah heid is nae right
Loved the brick moment Grey Queen - that is so me!!!!
Hugs and hang in there,

Yes, I used to find empty space looked like a weird gaping hole. I think I saw it as 'missing hoard/lost hoar'd that needed finding again before SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED.
Now it looks delightful and restful.
I laughed at Justin Case. It took me ages to get it - I was quite affronted by this evil fella.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
Ah, do you get used to there not being carp everywhere and that becomes normal, rather than the blanket of stuff that is so familiar and covers over the other things you are trying not to think about???0
