Can anyone please recommend a new TV for us ?

Our current old CRT TV is playing up (we keep getting a gentle intermittent banging noise on one the surround speakers and the TV's internal speakers are no longer working) so we are now looking to get a new TV.
We sit approximatley 10-to-12 feet away from the TV, which is next to a South-facing window.
A friend has suggested getting a new 40-inch LED TV. However, we think that this is slightly too large so are thinking of getting something slightly smaller; for example 37 inch or 38 inch.
With the sales now on, can anyone please recommend anything to us for a reasonable price ? We are looking to spend up to £400 and, if we can get a good deal, it would be even better.
We would like WIFI connectivity on the TV as well but it is not essential. For info, we are currently connected to SKY and have a VCR/DVD recorder connected our current TV as well; so the new TV will need to have at least 2 scart connectors and a HDMI connector as well.
Any help would be much appreciated as we are not experts and it is very difficult for us to work out what is a good buy and what is not.
Many thanks.

Go into Richer Sounds etc and look for offers on well-known brand models which have been superseded by newer versions.
£400 may be a little too modest a budget, but see what is available.
I don't know why you say 40" is too big, but 37" and 38" would be acceptable-they are each virtually the same size!
Avoid the Supermarket cheapies if possible as they have reliability issues.0 -
People moving from CRT to HD panels for the first time often underestimate the screen size they require. To actually see a benefit from HD pictures they need a much bigger screen than they have been accustomed to. Some manufacturers provide guides to screen size based on viewing distance on their websites.0

The following TV is the only 1 I could see on the Argos website that fits your description

This list has a bigger selection but most only have 1 scart connection.

I second this, brilliant service.
We were looking at a Toshiba in tesco, it was £258, went to richer sounds in Leeds, got a real bargain, it was £219 on the shelf and if you join up for their news letter, they send you a £10 discount voucher by email. So we got ours for £209:j:j
Also a 5 year guarantee is only 10% of the buying price.
Cant fault them...
In fact we went a week later and found a Humax HD freesat box, cheaper than anywhere else, OH joined up for the newsletter and we got another tenner off that.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Slimline and in budget. Full HD and smart tv, so is connected to the net.
Cheapest on the internet at Richer sounds:

£329
(I find it easier to have a look at the tv better on Currys website or in store, and then buy it at the cheaper price on Richer sounds0 -

Argos outlet £254 delivered and I have only had good service from them.0 -
My fella's mother was like you, had an old CRT that was on it's last legs and fancied a new one. Had a maximum budget of about £400 and a 32" in mind. Went to 3 shops, ended up getting one in curry's with a built in dvd player (very occasional use) for just over £200. Best to go have a wee look round them and see what takes your fancy.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

bear in mind 40 inch TV's are cheaper than 37 inch tv's. On that basis I would go for a 40inch.
You can solve the lack of scart with adapters, my samsung came with one. But i would personally go for a Sony or Panasonic as better picture, but would be just outside your budget.
I had a LG LCD TV, it lasted just over 2 years until it bust. They dont make them like they used too!0
