Its the holiday season - staffing levels are low - maybe there was no-one spare to accompany you - I don't know if this is a possibility but it is certainly why a lot of dealers try not to do Sunday test drives

He was on his own, but did say it simply wasn't their policy.

I've had it as well..i walked.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I've had salesmen say that I can only test drive a car if I place an order first. The joy of driving up in the same car frrom a different dealer because he's an arris hole.

I quite liked the look of one of the new cars there, which was considerably more than £4000k. Would love to drive up with that, but would be cutting my nose off to spite my face. Got more sensible plans for money at the moment sadly.

Not having the staff is no excuse. When we were looking for a car for oh a couple of years ago, he left me with the garage owner/salesman as security...
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Haha. Well he could have done that or we had a considerably more expensive car that we'd actually driven there in as security! He said that wasn't the point and that the car could get a mark, get dirty or be in an accident.

I once bought a car from a place with just one guy present, the owner. When I wanted a test drive he said no problem and installed his 9-year-old son in the passenger seat. Luckily for the son I was neither a thief nor a friend of Jimmy Savile, but I did find it a little bizarre. The car turned out to be superb, I owned it for 10 years without any issues at all.

I've had countless test drives where the salesman has said to me that he was the only one in and that I could go out on my own.

He said he would, but they are experts and therefore know what to look for and we can simply trust him, as a franchised dealer, that the car is fine.

    Hahaha - good one :rotfl:

Trust a used car salesman. Irony of all time.

Even better than "Trust me, I'm a banker"

I literally at this oxycodone induced moment can't think of a more scum-baggy profession than used car salesmen. No offence meant, but they brought this reputation on themselves.
  • Shocking! Clearly that salesman has never heard of customer service. Or manners. It sickens me to hear of such useless staff in jobs that other people would do far better. I've never come across anything like that before. Franchised dealers always have someone available to come on a test drive. Some just let you go on your own, especially years ago. Maybe accompanied/accompanied test drives depend on the brand?

I remember one time many years ago my parents went to a Peugeot dealer, the salesman opened his office door, grunted, and shoved a brochure into Mum's hand, then he closed the door again. Needless to say, he didn't make a sale ;)

It certainly seems that Ford dealer had something to hide, the car must be faulty. Definitely not a place to return to.
