Fraud or Not?

Should OP report that someone is claiming "family benefit, whatever it is called.". I imagine the authorities will laugh. This is probably the reason nothing has become of previous reports.
You cannot say that someone is claiming a benefit fraudulently but have no idea what it is called, based solely on the fact someone has a new car.
I would concentrate on getting on with my own life and only reporting fraud if and when I know exactly what that fraud is, rather than sounding jealous of someone's lifestyle to the point that I think there is a fraud taking place.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

The authorities don't expect you to know what precise benefits are being claimed - they can work that out for themselves. And they don't expect you to provide the evidence either. They gather that for themselves during their investigations. If the OP thinks he/she has well-founded grounds for suspecting fraud, then that's enough to report to the authorities.0

And you wonder why people get away with it - spurious/ malicious reporting wastes time. I trust you are happy for your taxes to be spent on this kind of activity, and for those that are genuinely committing fraud to get away with it, because the compliance teams are too busy dealing with reports based on nothing but jealousy?0 -

Anyone running a business with two sets of books is cheating someone!
Have you tried reporting this - https://www.hmrc.gov.uk/reportingfraud/index.htm0 -

Anyone that has two sets of books would not be publicising it to the local busybody!0 -
And they don't have a proper understanding of business & how a car can be financed.Blackpool_Saver wrote: »So many people on here want to nosy into other peoples business and they don't even have a proper understanding of the benefit system themselves, you see it so often, names used for benefits that stopped years ago0 -
I personally think you should leave your mate to his own devices, as it may backfire on you if you do report him and you are in the wrong.
If your mate is claiming benefits that he's not entitled too, it will catch up with him one day i'm sure.
It's not worth getting yourself involved with his business, but if you do then be prepared for a back lash if things go wrong mate or no mate.
Where money is concerned may be more than friendship you lose!0 -
If you are claiming housing benefit you have to have 2 sets of books. One for HMRC and one for the local council. Certain valid deductions for tax are not permitted on a housing benefit claim. I have myself 2 sets of books. One I show to HMRC on request and one for council. The book I show council has a higher profit figure as capital deductions are not permitted.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I do know that income has not been declared. How is for me to know, but it has been properly reported - and not just by me. Another person has proof as well and has reported it.
I have no reason to be jealous of the person involved. I have much more than he has, and a better life style. The difference is that mine has been paid for by properly taxed income. So please don't make assumptions about me.
If being angry that someone else deliberately doesn't pay their taxes, which means that every honest person has to pay more to subsidise them, makes me a "busy body", then guilty as charged! And I do not apologise for it.0
