I know loads of ppl with Virgin/NTL (quite popular in NI as ADSL is slow and there are no LLU exchanges) , and I've never known anyone to have a combined TV box/modem .i have a cable modem for the BB and a box for the telly
How is the cable to the Modem & Set Top box connected to Virgin/NTL ??
Do you have 1 cable, daisy chained to the 2 boxes (1 cable goes to Box1 then fly cable goes from Box1 to Box2) ??
Or do you have 2 separate cables, 1 cable going to each box ??

can't see how one box could be used for both BB and telly.for me at my old house i had the PC in one room and the telly in the other-i forget how it was wired up cos i moved four yrs ago.i do know that there was one cable.i've only had the freeview telly with them since this week and the guy just attached summat ( he mentioned splinter) to the existing BB cable and it went into the back of the box.0

See following:

Sounds like main 1st cable goes to Modem.
He added splitter with 2nd fly cable to connect to Set Top box.
Wasn't sure that was possible.

I have 1 cable from the box outside going to the STB in the living room (originally a Samsung now a V+). I have a second cable going to the NTL 250 modem upstairs . When I got a second STB in (Samsung from downstairs), a splitter was put on the cable going to the modem .0

With units on different floors, they install separate cable to each floor.
With units on same floor, they use splitter to link units.
Just wanted to check that if I ask for separate cable modem, they won't have to install another cable. It would be difficult installing another cable through my flat to back room.
That's good to know, I'll get them to install separate cable modem.
May even solve my speed problem in evenings.

I don't understand why you think that another modem will solve your speed problem in the evenings, when you have "Been told my area suffers from congestion"!
Not that will affect slow evening speed but are you connecting via USB or Ethernet? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

(swap boxes, swap cables, congestion, new cable repull to property).
But the installers are not experts & nothing is ever confirmed, they just swap boxes, install cables, tick-off their appointments & get out the door.
The fact is it seems my neighbour 2 doors up does not have a problem & uses a cable modem.
Using a Set Top box should not make a difference, but the fact the electronics for TV/modem processing is in one box may cause a problem.
Separating out the modem is another thing to try.
Other Virgin/NTL people also say it should not make a difference, we'll see.
Problem these days with computer problems is the only solution is to swap out parts & test, which is what the installers do.
