Virgin/NTL -Broadband through Phone line

Just because someone is in a cabled area doesn't mean that they will be getting Virgin BB via cable! If they subscribed to Virgin before the takeover, the choice was open to them. Lots of users prefer to keep telephony via a BT line to get free calls etc.
Virgin Media was a re-branding of NTL/Telewest earlier this year but there are thousands who still get their broadband with VM via a BT line. There will also still be many areas of the country where it may never be cabled, as it costs a lot of money to lay the infrastructure.
He mentioned "£26 connection fee", which seems to be about right for Virgin/NTL connection fee.
I assume he's probably on cable network, although he also said he "got broadband through phoneline", which doesn't sound right.
Yes, I think Virgin provided ADSL Broadband before Virgin Media rebrand.

First you said:I speak to man 2 doors away, ask if he has Broadband & is with Virgin/NTL.
He says he does, does not have any problems with speed !!!!!!
He says he doesn't have cable TV, he is with Virgin Media, "gets Broadband through phone". They reconnected phone & he has no problems with Broadband speed & that it's very fast.
Now you say:My neighbour said he was "connected to NTL, now Virgin" , so sounds like he was connected to NTL before Virgin Media.
Make you mind up! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
and am miffed that new customers are getting a better deal for the same price
No one mentioned to me about the 12 months contract for the tv box, nor did I sign any agreement to that effect. Now Ive been told that I cannot cancel the tv because of this 12 month rule. Looks like I'm stuck with the boring tv channels till next year
New customers are getting better deals - welcome to the real world . Been happening with all business types across all spectrums for a long time , not just restricted to Virgin Media !
Why did you sign up to the TV channels in the first place if you didnt want them ?0 -
Yes, I think Virgin provided ADSL Broadband before Virgin Media rebrand.
NTL provided an ADSL service called NTL-Freedom . Virgin had Virgin.net which was 50% owned by NTL . Both businesses have been absorbed into Virgin Media .
Cant imagine why anyone living in a cable area would want an ADSL broadband service ?0 -
I have got it,at a cost of £5.00 a month .Its only 1mb but it suits me.:D
Could you please let me know which package gives you 1MB BB at £5 ??
This link shows the min package starting from £14.990 -

The cabled area I am in suffers from Congestion (overload) in evenings.
Too many subscribers, higher speeds, the network can't cope.
Don't believe everything they say about Cable Broadband.
It promised streaming video, gaming etc, now the systems are overloaded & can't cope (of course this doesn't affect everyone).
Performance of my broadband was better 2 years ago, when I was on 1Mb service & ISP's hadn't started to overload systems by increasing speeds to 10+Mb/s speeds.

Your area must need upgraded then . I'm on 4mb and I get 4mb ALL the time . Friend of mine lives just up the road from me , he is on 10mb and he gets 10mb .0

Does anyone on Virgin Media/NTL use BOTH a Cable Modem (for cable broadband) & Set Top box (for cable TV) ??
Normally the Set Top box handles both broadband & TV.
Want to check if someone uses both Cable Modem & Set Top box.

I have seperate TV box and cable modem . I thought this was the norm and the BB via the TV box route was less popular ??? I know loads of ppl with Virgin/NTL (quite popular in NI as ADSL is slow and there are no LLU exchanges) , and I've never known anyone to have a combined TV box/modem .0
