Hows everyone doing with supermarket reductions?

What do you think is a reasonable amount to take of reductions-1 or more than 1.
I did get 5 loafs for 10p on NY eve which will do me all month.-Is that too much? I am concious of the fact that we are just cost cutting to pay debts from crap spending where as some people really are not coping.
I live near a London Tesco Extra and there isn't that much competition for the yellow stickers. I'm happy to stand back and let everyone get first dibs on stuff - I'm a creative cook and I don't eat spuds so it's not as if I'm desperate to get my hands on something specific. I always do well with my discount buys.
That being said I was in there on Tuesday and one old dear was in a bit of a state when we were waiting for the veg markdowns. She had a trolley full and was getting really aggressive with the assistant and hanging onto the side of the metal trolley where he was putting the markdowns, blocking everyones way - it just makes you think: have we come to this?Grocery Challenge - February £1000 -
I went to have a look if I could get anything in my co-op today. Yawn. So rubbish. Went down while my daughter was at pre-school, got 4 pork loins reduced from £4 to £2 and a loaf of bread from £1.55 to 65p both dated today.
Its just so boring. Everything is only 25-50% off, most stuff isn't even 50%. Had ham that had turned grey, loads of livers, kipper, haddock, mince lamb, whole chickens, yellow broccoli, apples and some fresh prepared chips. I didn't want any of it, especially not with only 25% off the price, thats an 'offer', not a sticker reduction especially with a use by date of today, there was LOADS of it too. They can easily ban her if she always behaves like this. No need to talk to shop colleagues like this.
This is why the code checkers do their 2nd reductions of the day in the back. Also if I happen to be in the back at the same time, they offer the stuff to me.0 -

The trouble is you see a bargain and then it is so nice you wish you had got more!
On NY eve there were honey gammons reduced to £1.17-my DD loves it so bought 2 -there were about 20 and not many people about. At the same time my hubbie picked up one ,when we realised we had 3 we put one back for someone else but we had 6 meals from the 2 hams and DD was so disappointed when it was all gone.

i'd say if there is something you'd use and have room to store it then take it. don't just buy something cos it's cheap and then end up chucking it ... i'm sure people must do this. if you go to the counter and no-one else there then help yourself, if it's a scrum decide if it's worth it or come pack later they may put more stuff out.
last week in tesco they loaded up the trolleys to reduce out back. we decided to go to asda and came back to find loads of reduced curry's we took 2 of each kind, so 6 in total for 32p each plus a couple of other things. we didn't clear the shelf as our freezers (2) are chokka, but if they'd been empty i'd have bought as many as possible. there were others helping themselves too, all very dignified. however, our nice sa told us there had been fighting over the bargains whilst we were away over meat. people screaming they'd been there first etc:eek:. the poor young sa was apparently shaking, no need for this sort of behaviour, if it looks like the vultures are out we avoid as it's a disgrace how the behave x:love: married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -

nope you're being selective, sometimes the first reductions are only worth it for someone planning to buy the item anyway. the best bargains are later at night x:love: married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -

Do they claim the money they loss from reductions back from the tax man. Or do they simply add on a few extra pennies to everything to make up for the reductions.
i.e. They have X number of loaves they need to sell at £1 each to make a good profit. But they know they will have to reduce the last few to 10p to get rid of them. So they set the price of the loaves at £1.20, and the extra 20p they get makes up for the money they loss from the reductions.
I don't pretend to know how supermarkets work, but I do know that there is nothing bought in this country that is not paid for by either the customer or the tax payer.
You may get to the till and pay 10p for a loaf that was on sale for £1 (or £1.20) yesterday, but you can bet your life that the supermarket has either already had the other 90p (£1.10) off you, or it's coming out of your taxes at some point this tax year.
each store will have a wastage budget which is offset against sales. therefore it's better to sell it for even 10p as it reduces the waste therefore a loaf that was £1 sold at 10p only takes 90p off the waste budget etc.
the waste budget can affect the store bonuses. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -
Greedy Grabbers and Bargain Tactics
My local Sainsbury's used to have a final mark down at around 8pm. Meat and fish bargains were reduced from half price to a quarter eg Beef Joint that was £12, would be £6, then down to £3 for the final mark down.
A Chinese couple around 60 years old had a scam going, they would take every single meat and fish bargain off the shelf at around 7.30 pm put those items in their trolley, they would then just push the trolley around the store until the mark down man appeared with his mark down table. The "mark down man" would always put his mark down table in the same spot, next to the milk around 8pm.
The chinese bloke would take things out of his trolley and put them on the markdown table, holding onto them and blocking anyone else from getting to the table. The member of staff would then just mark down those items to the final mark down price as they didn't want an argument, confrontation or dispute.
They were there every night doing this scam, the volume of food they were buying must have been for a restaurant.
They were depriving anyone from buying the items at half price, as they were walking around the store with them for half an hour. No one else got a chance to buy any meat or fish at 75% off as the chinese couple were running their scam.
I explained to the Manager what they were doing.....she was ready for them the next night....she explained that once the items were in their trolley they couldn't be taken out half an hour later and be reduced again. The Chinese couple pretended not to understand and walked off........not seen them in Sainsbury's since.0 -
