What would be sensitve? Any examples?.
are you really saying you can't think of any medical condition that might be of a sensitive nature and you need it spelling out to you..:undecided ?
The OP isn't being asked to let everyone know though, just the manager or HR.
Granted, but people may still find out. The point is, OP does not want them to know. The only way to be sure of this is to take the time off as holiday.

If the manager is such that they would be telling people such information then they aren't much of a manager. I agree that if they are so concerned about anyone knowing then taking holiday is the only way but they said they have no holidays left to take.

    Yes - name some?

You also think that when you call in sick at some places that only hr and your manger know whats wrong with you?

As I have already stated, I don't think the 'legal position' is black or white here, it is a grey area. Also I'm puzzled about the fact that you seem to know whether or not I'm pregnant - great diagnostic skills, considering the fact that you have never met me and don't even know whether I am male or female.

It would appear obvious that your appt is not pregnancy related because that would not come under a distinct NHS Trust.

There is normally only one area that comes under a distinct Trust, and if it is that, I fail to see the "sensitive" issue - it is probably the biggest cause of absence with most employers.

How will people find out? Anyone divulging such information would surely, again, be facing disciplinary action.

I have plenty of holidays left to take but only a small amount of people are allowed off at a time and the allocation is full.

People talk. And some managers can be sly. I remember a few years back I told my manager something in confidence. She didn't announce it to the rest of the team, as such, but she started talking to me about said thing within earshot of other people, so while she didn't tell them, they knew, iyswim!

That depends on the nature of the problem. I certainly would not have been happy to divulge information on a 'sensitive' health issue to people at work!

Hells Bells you couldn't get a more sensitive issue than mine.

However I took the attitude I wanted the time off so my boss had to see the letter - and it was far more embarrassing for him than for me!

If the op is embarrassed then they shouldn't be. No one should feel uncomfortable discussing a just an appointment.

I am sure the letter the OP has wont say what they are going for unless it's a proceedure compared to just visiting say a dermatologist.
