I had an appointment yesterday which I attended. I am grateful to the people who gave me good advice here but don't think there is anything to be gained by me posting in this thread again, so will not be doing so.

Someone will no doubt get great pleasure from having the last word, perhaps even someone who previously said that they weren't posting on this thread again and then in fact did so. Be my guest because I am definitely out.

Did you show your manager your letter?

did you read the bit you've just quoted? OP has said they won't be posting again.

Can't say I blame them. I hope their illness isn't too serious and things work out for them.

Some posters on this thread (not you j.e.j) need to remember that there are human beings behind each user name and sometimes they are feeling fragile.
  • Whilst I appreciate that the OP won't read this, I did wonder what the resolution to the initial problem was - did (s)he 'back' down and let the manager see the appointment letter , did the manager back down or is the OP now facing a disciplinary.

Oh well looks like another thread where we'll never know the answer

    Seriously?

Fragile or not the OP blew this well out proportion themselves.
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

At a guess I would say the OP took the advice (s)he was given on here as there really wasn't much choice. The employer wasn't being unreasonable. Sometimes when people don't hear what they want to hear they get defensive or aggressive, and in this case they are probably too embarrassed to admit to taking your advice as they would see it as an admission of defeat. (Which of course it isn't). I hope all works out for them.

AP007 is correct. Making up the time is not relevant. You want time off when you should be at work. Therefore if the employer says you must prove it, you must prove it. Or take holiday.
cant you get a sick note type thing from hospital?

Isn't the point that the OP needs proof in advance so that the employer will give him permission to take the time off?

I had an issue like this in November, I didn't need to show the letter as they just blankly said no.
