Mobility Scooter broke can I get a crisis loan?

Options
My mobility scooter was not holding its charge and now when I have gone to charge it nothing happens, it doesn't charge.

I've looked on the Internet and it could possibly be a faulty charger or the batteries need replacing. If it is the batteries it going to cost minimum £300ish.

If its a new charger I'm looking at approx £100.

Would I be able to apply for a crisis loan or something similar?

Are you in receipt of DLA ? If so, this is the kind of thing that is supposed to be used for.

Don't know about crisis loans, maybe better on the benefits board as far as that is concerned.

Do you have a battery specialist in the area? They should be able to test the battery and charger and tell you which is the problem - our local guy does this free of charge.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

There are a couple mobility shops in my area that I can try and see if they will check batteries and charger though I don't know if they'll charge me or not.

Personally, I would go to Yell.com and look for battery services in your area. They'll be better equipped to test your existing battery and advise if there is any way to recondition it, and if you do need a new battery you'll probably pay rather less .

Your batteries must be made of gold, my powerchairs, stairlift etc. batteries cost no where near £300, the above post is on the button , look for the batteries where they sell general batteries so you are not ripped off by mobility shops where they will happily charge you ten times more the same battery.

For example when I looked up the batteries for my stairlift (it has battery back up for powercuts) it turned out they were motorbike batteries and I got two new motorbike batteries for just under £30 where as the dealer wanted nearly £300 for the same spec batteries. Ive had that set of batteries for nearly three years now and they are still going strong.

For my PDQ I looked the batteries up on line and got the instructions to make it bigger and better (an extra cell fitted in the battery case alongside the other new cells) for a fraction of the price of a new battery from DaVinchy mobility.

    - get your battery & charger checked
    - daily users should charge daily, occasional users should charge before and after an outing
    - anyone leaving it parked unused and uncharged for long periods will kill a battery
    - no lead battery likes being completely discharged, including deep cycle batteries
    - batteries are 7.2amp 10/12/17/34/40 and 50 amp single or double units which one is yours ?
    - and what does the plate on your battery charger tell you it is ?

I got the prices from the searching the internet.
My scooter takes 2 x 75ah batteries, and the cheapest I have seen a replacement charger for is approx £80

There are a few different numbers on the charger itself but I know that there are 2 x 75ah batteries in/on the scooter which is a shoprider cordoba.
  • Class 3 HD is 24v so two 75Ah which are about £150 each on the makers recommended GEL from motability shops and £100+ each on non GEL ]Lucas LSLC75-12 - including VAT - delivered price (get your VAT off here)] this 24v will do 7Ah which is enough to fully charge two 75Ah.

That's a heavy duty scooter and at 1700+ watt hours that's a 30+ miles each way trip, do you need to do 70 miles a trip. Did you get both your battery & charger checked ?, have you even checked terminals, if they are gunged up or loose you will think both batteries and charger are goosed, when it may be the case that they are not. You need to get them checked before committing to such a lot of extra expense.

NOTE01: You can't just test your charger on a battery, a battery is 12v and your charger [unless its 12 / 24v switch-able] is designed to run two in series at an output of 24v.

NOTE02 : There are thousands of cheepo Lead Acid Rechargeable Leisure Batteries around they are no use for this application.

Just had a quote from the mobility shop that took my scooter in to look it over.

£98 for 2 new tyres as a cuuple of lads thought it'd be funny to slash them.
The batteries have run out so they want £400.

If you can point me in the direction of a cheaper place online that you would trust I would be extremely grateful.

It possibly might be a better idea for me to look for a 2nd hand scooter on ebay.
