    You fountain of knowledge x

I see the similarities, also with Dutch and Afrikaans - they're all rolled into one anyway, and derived from Latin.

    Oh dear.
You posted a thread to moan about people's use of slang or incorrect language and then say that?

It is FOUNT of all knowledge. Not fountain. (Although font is acceptable.)

It could be worse. In Spain, when someone is looking for a partner, they refer to "buscando a mi media naranja".

That means looking for my half an orange ...

Well, obviously. That's what I always mean when I type OH - my Orange Half.

Isn't that what everyone means? What's all this other half nonsense?

Strictly speaking, 'fountain of all knowledge' is correct rather than 'fount' or 'font'. All three are used nowadays, but the original fountain' version was a 17th century quote and the other two are just more modern variants of that original.
The quote is from 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding' by the philosopher, John Locke, published in 1690. Clearly, in it he was referring to God.
"Reason is natural revelation, whereby the eternal father of light, and fountain of all knowledge, communicates to mankind that portion of truth which he has laid within the reach of their natural facilities."
In a 14th century book, God was referred to as "the fountain of all goodness" and in the 16th century Book of Common Prayer there is a reference to "Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom".
However, Locke's quote - given above - is the earliest instance of the concept of knowledge having a fountain' as its source.

  • It's a phrase that fits all occasions, and wouldn't have become so popular if it didn't meet the need. I consider it as other half of a couple or other half of a whole, not of a single person.
Wife/husband doesn't always fit obviously, and I think "partner" sounds a bit formal or even challenging. Boyfriend/girlfriend is not always on-target for grown ups or suitable in some situations if you yourself happen to be respectively a boy or a girl!

Perhaps I'll try and get "it indoors" off the ground in 2013 as an alternative. Let's just see if my other half likes it....

My OH and I both dislike the term 'Guys', particularly when it's referring to a group containing women as well as men. It's a phrase that's everywhere.

We had somebody accost us in the local shopping centre trying to sell something (maybe Sky), with 'Hi Guys, can I interest you in....'

OH replied if you want to sell to me I'm only interested in 'Hello Sir'

And another one that's really annoying is people saying 'Can I get....' when they want something. 'May I have....'

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

I meant that having lots of gravy and having tea instead of dinner were Northern things also :rotfl:

    "Where was you?"

    and

    "Why wasn't you here?"

are not regional affectations (which are fine), it's wrong. And, like holding your knife and fork incorrectly, it's actually more effort than doing it correctly!

One of my favourite misheard phrases is "He put me on a pedal stool."
