  • I can't get it to work with the laptop open. If I open it nothing comes on the external monitor.

I have now got it on the external in safe mode but if I try to open the laptop to choose the operating system it goes off

have you pressed the monitor function key several times?

    This video,

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-HQhBVmp4Y

shows the location of the video connector (see 1minute 56) under the keyboard, pressing down firmly around the ASDFQWERZXCV keys may push the connector back into place if it's loose. The video also shows how to replace the power connector if you have future problems, the part costs about £20.

  • It has all gone off again so its not much use really. We have several computers just no other laptop which is what my son needs.

Can you recommend one for me that will do the job of basic coding.

gone off as in will not power on, or gone off as in nothing on the screen

basic coding in what? any windows laptop probably.

Your laptop may be repairable, you were on your way to finding out.

have you tried pressing down around the keys I suggested, and looked at the youtube video? and wiggled the power lead if it no longer powers on?

  • gone off as in everything went off. I have done everything you suggested and it is now again on the external monitor in windows.

When it was in safe mode it started fixing then just went off again. It had a code 48 and file 61453 and 99195 then 99197 but as it was running through them it just all went off again.

  • The problem is not the jack as the laptop is still lit up it is the monitor that goes off and the laptop screen is either white or grey with white lines or black but the laptop on button is lit up

gone off as in everything went off suggested completely dead, ie no power

    run

    chkdsk c: /F

    and reboot

    to check for disk corruption

the screen problem could just be a loose connector, the one in the video - you may need to remove the keyboard to be sure it's firmly in place if pressing down on keys makes no difference (not as involved as procedure in the video, just a few screws)

has it been dropped or picked up by holding the screen instead of the base?

  • Thank you for all your help.

I am a complete novice an am not comfortable removing the keyboard. I am amazed I managed to get it going at all to be honest and it is now working with the monitor.

This however is not much use to take to the workshop so I will still need to get him one.

If it has been dropped it was while it was in the repair shop as we are both really careful. My lodger used to carry hers by the screen an in the end it wouldn't close so we know to carry it properly. We also never used it while it was charging so we really were careful.

I am just running the security scan on it and will try the above when it has finished
