Right I got fed up so closed the laptop while it was still attached to the monitor and it came up with stuff on the monitor.
Unfortunately when I open the laptop it goes off again

Does the system boot and work perfectly on the external monitor

pressing the monitor function key should allow you to type on it while using external monitor.

Read this thread ..Not guaranteed at £288 but if you use all the codes mentioned it is still very cheap for the spec.

Only thing is it won't arrive by the 5th Jan ..

Keep an eye on HUKD and pray something good gets posted in the sales maybe ?

Managed to get the laptop open and monitor is on.

I still have a blank screen on the laptop and am in windows on the monitor.

The monitor screen still goes off if I shut the laptop

Thanks I had a look at that but as you say I need it for the 5th so it must be available from a shop really.

the function key button toggles between

    laptop monitor only
    external monitor only
    both at the same time

so you need to press it until the external monitor is on when you have the laptop open, and ideally both at the same time.

it could be something as simple as a loose video cable connector.

The fact you can see external output means windows/hard disk/motherboard/graphics chip is ok.

If you pinch lightly around the edges of the screen or apply firm pressure all over the keyboard, does anything happen?
