If you think that a DELL OEM disc will activate with an ACER laptop, you need to go back to school.
Just because you saw it written somewhere and misinterpreted what was written, does not mean that you have to repeat it here 'parrot-fashion'.
As to your other suggestion to install Vista 64bit..... what are you thinking??
The OP was simply alluding to the processor. Why would she need a 64bit OS with 1GB RAM?
As for my suggestion; 1GB RAM for Vista Home Premium is barely adequate. The upgrade is recommended and simple.
It's worse that you write here as if you are knowledgeable, when you clearly are not.
I've been using and activating Dell OEM discs with all flavours of operating systems/manufacturers for years. I think you're the one who has no idea. Which OEM disc have you used that didn't work (activate) with another brand? Please, let us all know.
The OP has never said they have a 32bit system either in fact they've said very little yet you seem happy to scare them even more talking about opening a laptop and messing with RAM. That's really stupid advice.0 -

Ignorance is bliss eh?
I will work backwards through your post....
Anyone with a least a little intelligence could find out that laptop came replete with Windows XP or Vista 32 bit. I don't need the OP to tell me. But it seems that you do.
Again why, I ask you, would the OP be running a 64 bit OS on a five year old laptop with 1GB of RAM?
Again I ask, do you consider that 1GB RAM is adequate to run Vista Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit(which incidentally is what she has installed)?
It is precisely some idiot who thought a DELL OEM disc would work with an ACER that has left her in this predicament.
If you don't believe me, ask her....or I can show you the proof.
There is absolutely no reason why one should use a Vista Business DELL recovery disc over the Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (x86) - DVD (English) for non DELL machines.
Even worse, recommending a DELL Vista Business disc for an ACER with a Vista Home Premium licence is just ridiculous.
You simply have no idea.
I really hope that you don't actually charge people to fix their PCs. Diabolical.
Do you work for PC World?? Why would the OP be scared of opening the user friendly hatch at the bottom of the laptop and replacing the modules there?
Seems that you are the one trying to scare the OP.
I'm sure that your suggestion to create an outdated Vista SP1 64bit OS, utilising the .wim files and various bit of software and hardware filled her with joy.
Seriously, give it a rest my friend. I'm not one for makeshift solutions. I do it properly the first time.0
