Your machine has lots of versions
Install www.belarc.com run that file and print out or save the web page it makes. It will give you a pretty detailed specification. Maybe email it to yourself too so you can read it on another device.
Drivers ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_7520/vista/ Acer have a updater tool too which should work fine http://global-download.acer.com/FilesDownload/ALU/LiveUpdater.exe That's for use once you get your Vista reinstalled.0 -
I had this model and it came with XP Pro.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0

You should be able to do a clean install with any manufacturer (OEM) disc if you can borrow one or try the 64bit version http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-vista-official-iso-download-links-digital-river.aspx Take a bit of time to work out what you're doing.
If it asks for a key just skip that screen when you first install Vista then later on enter the key when asked to activate. At the worst you may have to phone Microsoft to activate (automatically done with a robot system -have a pen and paper ready) over the phone but it's unlikely.
Or just spend £25 as mentioned and get a nice new Windows 8 download http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8
If you want an easy life W8 may be your easiest option but whichever you go for make sure you have all your drivers in place especially anything to do with LAN/wi-fi so you can get back on the Internet.
Does your sticker (COA) show Vista Premium?
This is completely wrong.0 -
Just to add, from what I've seen, it will run almost certainly run faster with Windows 8 than with Vista.
In this case I'd go with Windows 8 for £24.99.
I've recently saved a perfectly good Acer desktop (Vista/2007) from going to landfill, it's running Win 8 Evaluation edition using Vista drivers from the Acer site.
In my case, Windows 8 installed all the drivers to get it going, it's just that installing the Acer drivers gives a few more options for the display, sound etc.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
NiftyDigits hello i am trying to PM you but your inbox is full, thank you0

Clear now.
Whilst you are there, perhaps you can check as to how much RAM is currently installed.
Using the keyboard; whilst holding down the Flying Windows key, press the Pause Break key.0 -
Just realised that your machine has a 2 x 512MB RAM configuration, as opposed to 1 x 1GB with one slot free. That means that in order to move to 2GB, you will need to purchase 2 x 1 GB RAM... or alternatively, swap one of the 512MB modules for a 2GB RAM module.
Of course you could just purchase a 1GB module, taking it to 1.5GB. Certainly better than now, but 2GB RAM is better.

Unlikely. I'm sure.
I don't think the OP should be messing with RAM. Stupid in fact to recommend it.
Just get Vista back on. If you are completely stuck just ask around for a Vista disc designed for manufacturer install which will look something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400369795980 -

You are just showing your ignorance here.
If you think that a DELL OEM disc will activate with an ACER laptop, you need to go back to school.
Just because you saw it written somewhere and misinterpreted what was written, does not mean that you have to repeat it here 'parrot-fashion'.
As to your other suggestion to install Vista 64bit..... what are you thinking??
The OP was simply alluding to the processor. Why would she need a 64bit OS with 1GB RAM?
As for my suggestion; 1GB RAM for Vista Home Premium is barely adequate. The upgrade is recommended and simple.
It's worse that you write here as if you are knowledgeable, when you clearly are not.0
