Advice please for acer aspire 7520 64bit

hi, I bought a second hand laptop and when I did the updates, I got this message on my screen bottom right corner

Windows 7 build 7601
This copy of windows is not genuine

The person failed to tell me he didn't have genuine windows installed.

Anyway I'm stuck with it now.

Will I have to buy windows 7 for it and how much will it cost me please?

Can someone please advise me as what to do next to fix it?

Please could you explain it as easy as possible, I know a bit about computers, but I'm no expert.

Thank you

You would probably be better off paying £25 for a windows 8 upgrade copy as windows 7 keys are quite expensive still. If not contact Microsoft and tell them the truth. They may take pity if you can provide proof of purchase etc

  • Click Start and in the Run box type slui.exe 4, Enter. Select the UK activation centre , call, speak with a real person and explain what happened.

No need to pay for anything, as you already have a licence attached.

Since we don't know the provenance of the software currently installed, it is better to download a clean copy.

    Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 U (media refresh)

Download and save it to the machine and when fully downloaded, place a blank DVD in the drive and double click on the file to create the DVD.

    Installation instructions to follow.

Oops...hang on. That laptop came with Windows Vista. So no Windows 7 licence.

You can reinstall Vista for free or pay £25 for Windows 8.

if it came out of the factory with W7, and has a sticker, and hasn't been wiped by the previous owner, you should be able to create the windows discs with acer erecovery, and also be able to factory restore it using the same program, however if it has a genuine W7 sticker, contact microsoft first, and backup any data before considering reinstallation

    It's a Vista machine....

She can try a recovery anyway.

You should be able to do a clean install with any manufacturer (OEM) disc if you can borrow one or try the 64bit version http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-vista-official-iso-download-links-digital-river.aspx Take a bit of time to work out what you're doing.

If it asks for a key just skip that screen when you first install Vista then later on enter the key when asked to activate. At the worst you may have to phone Microsoft to activate (automatically done with a robot system -have a pen and paper ready) over the phone but it's unlikely.

Or just spend £25 as mentioned and get a nice new Windows 8 download http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8

If you want an easy life W8 may be your easiest option but whichever you go for make sure you have all your drivers in place especially anything to do with LAN/wi-fi so you can get back on the Internet.

Does your sticker (COA) show Vista Premium?

There may be no recovery section (whomever installed W7 may have formatted ('deleted') the disk or partition).

See my post above for plenty of other options.
