Pay ALL your debt off by Xmas 2013

I've been a bit emotional lately, I had a good old cry the other night as I was sad that life hasn't worked out how I envisaged it, but had a good old chin-wag with the OH and we've both agreed on some goals that we both want to achieve in the coming year. I'm due back to work in March, so we discussed that and we've agreed that I can work less hours if work agrees, so it will hopefully mean no childcare costs, we'll get to spend more time together as a family and we'll have time allocated for a 'date night' type thing with the OH. I'm feeling so much more positive that we're heading in the right direction, financially and as a couple that I feel a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders - one that I didn't even realise was there until the other night! It might of course mean that my DFD moves back, but if it means we end up there in one piece and all together then it's worth it.
I could have written this about 6 months ago choclover, I had to accept that we weren't going to have the life I thought we would have. It was a bit of a shock to be honest, I had to work through it myself really as my DH is much more content with his lot but he was a good sounding board and like you say, we are here in one piece and together :j
The good news is that I still feel much more positive and can't remember the last time I cried (it was a daily occurance at one point!) so the feeling of optimism can lastYour first payment is a stonkingly good one, well done :T

recurrent-ostrich wrote: »Right, lovelies. I need some advice. Additional to our debt, we also have a £3.5K overdraft on our joint account that we max every month. Our overdraft fees are £50 a month, which I have worked out to be an 18% interest rate on a debt that we will have for three and a half years, making £2000 in interest.
I'm considering putting some of the overdraft onto a CC and then REDUCING the OD limit (so we don't rack it up again). The way I look at it is if I can get it onto a CC at a rate of less than 18% we'll be saving money, yes?
Does this make sense?
I see I'm a little late with the advice but, nonetheless, I would agree that as long as the CC APR% and transfer fee come to less than you think you'll be paying over the life of the debt then it's a wise move. Just don't delay in reducing the overdraft!Wow! Finally caught up - everyone seems really chatty which is great for keeping us all motivated during the longest month of the year!
Congratulations to Sutizger and HelenPie - you've given me a nice warm glowy feeling!

There also might be an opportunity for the OH to get a flexible part time job that i think he's hoping to do in the evenings and weekends.
I've not done the snowball for a while, so will need to look at that when I get a chance. Everyone's making such great payments already, it's really inspiring! On the 0% thing, I'm going to try and get one in June as I messed up a bit the other month and got the date wrong for when one of my cc dd were due to go out, even though I realised on the same day and transferred money in using a faster payment it still bounced !
Sorry if I've missed anything or anyone out - keep up the good work!:T
Sounds like you've made some positive choices. I'm a great believer that just having those conversations with your partner and agreeing what your true priorities are is such a great relief. Try and keep to your plans for reaching your goals but don't be too hard on yourself for little slips along the way.
Oh, and Date Nights are great. OH and I started them recently as we don't get much time together. We don't do much but just knowing that it is *our* time is lovely. Enjoy:jDebt Free By Xmas 2013 #010 £16,660.26/£16,660.26 100% paid, DFD 25/06/13!:j0 -

Just made a PAD to catch up with the days I've been a) partying b) hungover in bed,....lost an entire day to my bed yesterday! Thank goodness for holiday. I should explain that I am not a drunkard, but that I was designated driver NYE (well the OH was but he used the "I'll just have a few drinks" and I replied with "You're not driving if you do that!"). So we had NYE on new years day so I could celebrate, cocktails and nibbles with 2 other friends at our flat, no driving and a lovely time listening to music
This year I'm going to not be afraid of my bank account, I'm always really scared of it for some reason does anyone else get that? But this year I am going to sort all the finances out once and for all. We have a budget, that we're trying to stick to, and I've got a spreadsheet the OH and I are linked to via computers. So fingers crossed I can keep it together and crack the whip a bit
One huge success today was the OH went to the shop for milk & bread and only came back with milk & bread hurray \o/

I always 'preview signature' just to make sure everything is ok.
Then click on save signature if you're happy. Just have a little play around.
Hope that works
