this is the same at my work. we have to ring from the staff room and I don't always want everyone to know my business so I say to the receptionist 'Im in a public place at the moment so I cant discuss it'.

I hope you feel better soon xx

I did say that before, but the receptionist still made me say, I think it depends who you get sometimes.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I decided to contact a counsellor. I don't think my work offers any services, but there are services around. I know exactly what the problem is (missing friends, family, OH, etc, though obviously there's more than just that). I need to just say it all out loud I think.
  • I will have to book an appointment from work, and the receptionist will make me say what's wrong before they'll let me get an appointment.

It's none of the receptionist's business.

Your medical condition is confidential, between you and the doctor.

Just tell him/her that you aren't well, and need an appointment.

When they ask you what's wrong ask them if they are a doctor. When they say no tell them you would rather speak to a doctor.

I wouldn't tell just about anyone what's wrong with me. My sisters doctors operate a triage service, so the doctor calls them back before they see anyone, but even then she only tells the doctor. What if the receptionist was the lady next doors bit on the side, the entire neighbourhood might know you have problems with your lady bits before noon and certainly before the doctor saw you! (extreme example but still).

I've said that as well, but they refuse to budge. I spent a good few minutes with one receptionist saying "it's private, and I would prefer to keep it between me and the Dr" - they say they "can't give you an appt unless you tell them what's wrong"

Tell them, if they don't mind their own business, and book you an appointment, you will report them to the PCT.
