I agree ^^I try very hard to get gifts for my loved ones that I hope they will like. It doesn't mean I will buy any old tat in a sale!
I also appreciate the thought, love and effort that goes into a homemade gift. one of the things we did when money was tight last year was make food gifts, cards etc and i think they were probably nicer pressies than this year when I have more money but less time so have bought things0 -
Can I ask what hoover you got? Was it a bargain, I am desperate for a new one and can't decide what to get, I really need a non upright one though as I dont have the room for it.
O wow that sounds exciting! Are you already a beautician or are you starting this year? It all sounds fantastic, we may be a in a recession but the beauty business is really booming!Own_My_Own wrote: »Am a bit addicted to the Boots thread. The things they moan about :rotfl:
One question that keeps coming up is receiving a gift that cost a fiver.
I think we discussed it last year but I can't remember for sure.
One lady said she had bought lots of sets today, to break up and repack, so nobody knew she got the contents cheap.
Now I spend the amount I allocated that person. My nieces get a budget of roughly £10 and I have got them a gift worth over £40.
I did not get them £10 sets for £2.50 each.
What does everyone else do ?
Do you use the pre sale price or the sale price ?
before, i always used the price i paid. however, this year, i will use the "before" or "rrp" price, as we have no option but to cut down big time on spending. people can like it or lump it!!msgigglewick wrote: »On the lines of people buying from sales to gift... how about home made gifts? do people see those as cheap too?... see i know what i can make is on par of what is sold in shops if not better sometimes but if i gift it to someone it feels like im being 'cheap' as someone put it lol.. Specially now i know those receiving know we can afford something 'more' ... do you buy a gift and give the homemade item or what?
Never thought there was a unwritten law when it came to pressies before lol
i have had people tell me that although my home made gifts are lovely, its a cheap present - needless to say, these people now get a card at very most! i will continue to make gifts that i feel are suited to the individual, and regardless of what it costs, i give it with love & thought. i hope that to most people, that is still what matters - but there will always be those that think a gifts quality is determined by its price tag!!!It's not about getting what you want, It's about wanting what you get.0 -

I totally agree.
As I said in my other post, most of my gifts have a £5 budget. I do try to get them bits in the half price sale. 2 of them have a book each for £3.33, but I know they will love them.
I don't see my nieces, so Christmas is the only time I really get to spoil them.
When I saw them regularly they got smaller gifts, because I treated them(days out etc) during the year.0 -
pinknfluffy28-Good luck with your new business venture.
Feisty-Hope your dogs operation goes well, sorry it has eaten your savings.
Betsie2010-Hope you are ok? xxx
OMO-I usually use the pre sale price but sometimes its not worth the pre sale price so use what I think its worth iyswim! It irks me too when people just buy lots of random stuff and decide later who to give it to, not much thought there really.
Got lots of great stuff in the Boots sale, ended up going to our local, picking my mum up nd going to her local then had to go back to our Boots after school for some dental gel so had another look lol. Most of it is for birthdays/mothers day. I also managed to get the lovely pie dish set and tart set that I wanted, they only had one pie dish set left on Sunday and I didnt get there until an hour after opening so was so pleased to get it.Only £4.50 and it includes a ceramic pie dish, pastry brush and ceramic pie bird. :j

All they had was a few electric toothbrushes (pretty much identical to the one he already has) dalek alarm clock (again identical to the one he has except colour of the dalek) and 2 figures he already has. So no luck there lol.

jakesbakescakes, I don't mind you asking-its from the thread on here, started by soulie. I currently only have 3 things on my list.
1)scrapbook for my sisters birthday.
2)christmas cards for this year.
3)sew a handbag for my other sisters birthday.
Still thinking of some more. All these things are new to me and so if one goes really well I'm hoping to have a new hobby. Trying to mix it up so i can make gifts for either this year or the future, and learn something new. I saw the title of the thread and read a few pages, decided to join in especially since I enjoyed sewing our names onto our stockings this Christmas.13 projects in 2013 0/130 -

you got the pretty pie dish! I got a pudding bowl and jug in the same pattern. I would have liked the tart set but none left. the pie dish set I got has the same things as yours but has a guiness pattern. not my choice but I bought it to give to OH for his birthday.
as I said I ordered two dr who figures online but not sure what they are! I only buy figures in the sale so we have a very random selection:Dsaving for ds2's summer international scout camp - £200

feisty they had a few hello kitty clocks in our store, if they are still there would you like me to pick one up for you. if I do manage to find one and you can wait till mid february we are coming down to the new forest.
Oh bless you BunbunI have decided that even though it is a bargain at £3.50, I really don't need it - plus I would have to put it on DH side of the bed, which really wouldn't go down well
But thank you so much for your kind offer!
Cookie (the dog) is finally home. It didn't go as straightforward as her last op and sadly the fee increased to almost £400We have also been warned that her next operation will need to be done by a specialist - starting price of £3k per leg
Can anyone recommend a decent pet insurance that will cover pre-existing conditions?

I bought the Guinness one too. I'm giving it to DH for Valentines day as he's gotten into making pies recently. He also loves Guinness, so might get the ingredients to make a steak & Guinness pie to go with it. Really pleased to get it because it wasn't something I'd seen in the shop before. Ended up spending my £10 on things for other people, when I was supposed to be using it to treat me, but there was nothing there that I needed. So I figured I'd use the voucher for gifts & use my own money to buy a dress I liked in the Evans sale.
Also bought some cute Christmas socks in Tesco. 4 in a pack for £2. Wanted to buy some for myself, but I already have about 8 pairs of Christmas socks and they only get worn for about 6 weeks of the year, so won't need replacing for a while!Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27
