I've got steak and kidney, with onions and carrots. I only used a bit of water and a Bovril cube for the gravy and it's a bit thin. I might take the lid off for a bit so it doesn't gather any more liquid.

  • I just took my stewing lamb out of the slow cooker and cut it up. It just fell apart and I got a large bowl of diced cooked lamb out of it. This was meat on the bone, bought from Sainsburys Basics range for £3.60. I think it's good value as lamb is usually too expensive, and I'd buy it again.

I just need to find a recipe now with lamb and rice maybe? ...

Our beef went down very well today - the meat was so tender and the bonus is that there was more than enough left over, so I've now minced that and may do a meatloaf tomorrow

Veggie stew! Pearl barley, sweet potato, turnip, parsnip, carrot, celery, stock. It's been in there all day and smells gorgeous! Just about to get the dumplings on. Yum yum yum.

Carribean chicken and it smells gorgeous. Can post the recipe if anyone needs it but its the one in the MR instruction book that comes with the slow cooker. What would you serve with it, rice?
I was given a slow cooker for Christmas and I just love it. We're having Chili today with a dash of red wine and it's smelling wonderful. I used the receipe supplied with the slow cooker. I now intend to check out the library for some slow cook cookbooks. Enjoy your meal, it sounds lovely. Think I'd have it with rice.

Also, does anyone have a fab lamb shank recipe?

My fave is lamb shank in red wine and onion sauce. In the SC, I do enough for 6 large/9 normal sized portions if I take it off the bone and divvy up the meat:
    - Heat a pan and saute some cayenne, paprika and harissa (couple of teaspoons in total) in some oil - substitute your own 'warming' spices as suits. As it starts to cook, add half a bottle of red wine (and 200ml of balsamic vinegar if you wish) and reduce by half.
    - Add 3 tins of french onion soup, 1 tin of chopped onions, 6-10 crushed garlic cloves, a large sprig of rosemary, 6 lamb shanks and the spicy reduction to the SC and cook for 7-8 hours.

I tend to take out the lamb at 6 hours, remove the lamb skin (slimy!), take the meat off in large chunks and bung it back in so it soaks up the sauce.

You might need to add cornflour an hour from the end to thicken the sauce.
  • just had chicken stew....lovely! i just keep forgetting to take the skin off. i used chicken leg quarters. managed to fish out most of the bones but still found a bit of knee joints etc. was really nice though....and cheap! am loving my SC. it's one my mum gave me....it's older than me! (v 70's brown and beige wedding pressie) but does the job. only a 3 lt jobbie so not big enough for a whole chicken. :( am loving using the cheaper cuts of meat and with a bit of gravy browning the kids don't even notice the difference. result!

Can I ask for some help with my slow cooker stuff - is it just me, or do you end up with runny gravy and sauces with whatever's been cooked in the SC?

How do you thicken them - can I use cornflour as I would normally do on the hob?

Love the tender meat, but not so keen on how runny my sauces are though :(
