I have just taken a couple of butternut squash out of mine! I hate peeling the things so put them in whole (scrubbed first) last night with 3 Tbs water. Took them out this morning and they were lovely and soft so I am going to scoop out the insides and make soup with some and rissotto with the rest.

What a great idea! I hate peeling them too, so this is a real help. So you left them for what, about 8 hours? Was that on medium?
Life is not a dress rehearsal.
  • Homemade chilli in mine, mince, and onions browned first, a tin of chopped toms, 1 tin oxtail soup, tom puree, hot hot chillis, hot hot chilli sauce, paprika, red wine, chilli powder and flakes, kidney beans and some red lentils i had in the back of the cupboard. Not sure about the lentils though, that may be the firat and last time i try that experiment, i dont like it much. Its been on all night, turned off all day then shall heat it up again half ann hour before we eat. will serve it on a bog crusty jacket spud with some sour cream. Yum!!

  • savingforoz - my slow cooker is ancient. It has a high, a low, and an auto setting. I put the butternut squash in overnight on 'auto'. They were incredibly soft when they came out. I would think that you could get away with between 5 and 7 hours. First one I halved, spooned out the seeds, and scooped out the flesh for the soup and it turned out really well. The second I let cool and it firmed up a bit because I wanted to peel it and then cube it for use tomorrow. This is my preferred method now for getting off the skin with no hassle!
  • Hi Cat Addict,
In reply to your question about how much liquid to use, I would say it depends really if you want to make gravy/stew. If you just want the meat then I would only add a drop. For example, this morning I put a giant turkey leg in mine with just a cup of plain water. I've just got in and the meat is so tender, falling off the bone. We've had loads of gravy/stew meals recently so I'm just going to strip the meat off and fry it up with some mushrooms and add tomato pesto or chiili sauce (or both!) and have with crusty bread. Not sure what it will be like but I think it's all about experimenting. hope that helps.
  • By the way, what's chicken dickinson?!
  • Thanks KatyCocoa - I was worried about drying up or burning.

Chicken Dickinson I had at a friends house and asked for the recipe. It is chicken breasts, broccoli and mushrooms cooked in condensed chicken soup, cream, mayonnaise, spoonful of curry powder, and I think that's it. My recipe is downstairs in my folder. It was delicious and she did it with a jacket spud and I've been nagging her for the recipe ever since!

  • Hi all you resident slow cooker users.... thanks u all and this thread for 2nites lovely meal. Have lurked around here for ages and yesterday took out my slowcooker of about 4 yrs and used it for the 3rd time today. First 2 attempts were disatrous (sp?), however, todays Lamb Shank stew spiced with Garlic, Oregano & Hot Paprika served with Plain Rice was absolutely delious, even my 4yr & 1yr cleaned their plates. Hubby who usually only eates lamb if its grilled, loved it.
