Why does the UK close so early?

This is a rant not looking for answers to the issue
Did not notice this until I had to show a person used to longer hours but the UK does close really early.
During the winter many tourist attractions close 3 -4pm not much better in the summer when most are closed at 5pm.
Was at the church in Stratford which Shakespeare is buried in at 4pm one day in January it was closed as we were leaving a big coach of Japanese tourists turned up.
Galleries in Birmingham/London closing at 5 why? are they only for the jobless?
Shops, one week before Xmas closing at 6 just as the town centre they are in gets free parking and all the big shopping centres still open dragging people into the town. If you want to only work a set number of hours what is wrong with midday - 8pm?
Banks in Moscow are open till 9pm on a Sunday.... Yes 9 pm..... on a Sunday! mind you they have less use of internet banking than we do...but then the main reason I tend to use internet banking is because our banks always seem to be closed when I want to use them! Money/Cheques go in an envelope in a machine.
Town centres dead at 6pm and all the traders moaning about the out of town supermarkets draining trade that are open 24 hours and 7 days a week (with the exception of the stupid Sunday trading laws), but do any of them do anything to alter the situation... or just moan and want legislation to stop others opening for the convenience of the customer, not the service provider (you listening Dr's!?).
It was absurd in Birmingham City Centre to be in a Costa (not a small player) 18:30 on a Sunday with the German Market in full throng outside the street packed with potential customers to be told, as we supped the cappuccino’s we bought some 10 minutes earlier, we are closed now can you leave!
Welcome to the UK.....it closes early and the TV is crap!

The TV is crap? I think it's good! Better than most American TV anyway (bar a few good ones).
I live in London and London doesn't close at 6pm. Most shops are open till 8pm every day or 10pm near Christmas time, The Disney store on Oxford Street closes at 12 this month!
Most places close at 6pm because that's the hours people want to work.0 -

What time is the National Gallery open till, the museums?
As to shops I am sure this is the time they want to work to but stop complaining about others taking trade you open when the customer wants not when you want or the customer goes elsewhere.
British TV has been dragged downhill by American TV as large lumps of it are American!
There are still some good bits of British TV, mainly done by the much maligned BBC, but......
This is a rant, only opinion, my opinion.
I just think we need to rethink on the way we do things.I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0 -

American tv is far superior than UK tv.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
if offeneded so much.
Why not open your own small independant shop down the high street and have it open 24 hours a day?
Then who cares about TV as you will always be at work0 -

does everyone in the UK work 9-5?
In his defence most well educated people(who enjoy the arts) with good jobs only work 9-5.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Where there is the demand shops open for longer periods e.g. supermarkets.
For other shops it is going to depend on the balance between costs of keeping staff on and likely takings. With more shopping being done over the Internet this trend is not likely to change much.
For museums and galleries it is probably going to depend on costs. If their budget only allows them to spend x on staff then they can't open until 10 each evening.
Banks in Moscow maybe open for longer hours and also on a Sunday but as you can take money out of thousands of cash machines and do banking online what is the call for them to be open for these hours which would come at some cost to the customers.0 -
For you to visit a gallery/attraction then possibly a dozen people would need to work. That means more crap hours for people. There is the cost/benefit ratio and also licensing hours - non alcohol related. Some Councils are notoriously pithy about opening hours and there could be late night noise/traffic/nuisance for neighbours of attractions. The man without a signature.0
