Right at the top of your budget, but a very good machine:

A bit less expensive, but also very nice:

There are others you might like in the samearea of the site. I like E Buyer, I have bought loads from them over the years. Only had one problem, sorted with a refund or replacement and I replaced.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

The point, which should be obvious, is what is wrong with the laptop, ie symptoms.!!

Thank you so much for looking for me :A
Can i safely assume that all laptops come with built in Wifi now ? Don't really understand all the tech specs apart from memory and things like DVD drives etc !0 -

The quote means " to die " or for an inanimate object " to cease to work "
It's dead Jim. Bloke in PC shop says it's beyond repair, hence my post looking for a new one. If he thought he would get some money out of me for repairing, i'm sure he would have tried !0 -

No it's probably not, but you have to look at it from a financial point of view don't you ? I can't repair it myself, is it worth me paying for it to be repaired if a new one, with newer specifications, will not cost me much more ? It's 4 years old, it's had it's day.0 -

That looks fantastic, will have to wait until after Jan payday though as don't want to have to use my credit card. I've been good all year, paid it off, and haven't used it once this Xmas ! I'm using my daughters laptop at the moment so am not without one but she's getting peed off now ! I'll have the money available when i get paid so will treat myself then

if it's a hp/compaq, and the charger light is on, and the power connection appears ok, and no lights come on at all, sometimes pressing down hard on different parts of the keyboard at the same time as powering on may bring it back to life.
your data should be retrievable if you need any of it.!!
