Don't most schools come with huge drop/off pick-up zones?
I believe they are called playgrounds.
The schools could charge to use the facilities :)

1 school nearby has way too many parents who coem with the car to park in the car park if they have 1, they end up parking on 1 side which is ok but it can cause backlog of traffic.
  • So we've had the reasons for driving to and from school, what are the 'reasons' for the bad driving; speeding, parking/driving on pavements (including driving at speed on pavements to park!), blocking roads, idiotic and illegal parking?

    I can't answer those unfortunately.

I do drive to/from school as we live 35 mins at my speed, about 45 mins at the children's. I arrive early I. The morning as I need a quick get away as I don't have long between drop off and starting work. On the way home I arrive early 2 days a week as it is not worth going home for 10 mins before going out again. I often take my kindle and have a bit of me time.
  • I was doing deliveries down a road where a school was. Parked up on double yellows (allowed to, delivery van), did my drop. Came back to a traffic warden putting ticket on a parent car also parked next to where I was on the double yellows. Once that argument ended he said afternoon to me walked passed to the car behind and started to write another ticket. The parent hit the roof insisting I should get a ticket. I had to step in and explain the highway code (I carry the book in the van for these situations) that I'm correctly parked and not them. There was spaces 50 yards up the road.......

I'm in Scotland and I asked the police re the parking on pavements thing (not re school but causing prob with parking) and its not illegal here - not meant to but not illegal!

Our local police ticket offending parents parked on zig zags outside our primary school. The parking is completely rediculous with cars both sides of the road, also parked on zigzags and double yellow lines on a bend. They also park up on the pavement so you can hardly get past. They have had to shut the gates of the school car park during start and end of the day with the janitor only letting in minibuses for after school care collections. The senior staff also frequently go out and monitor the situation, asking parents to move from zigzags, etc. I live in a cul de sac by the school and some of the parents park in our street. I would be fine if they parked with some consideration but they block drives and also our street is never gritted in the winter so I don't know why they persist in using it.
I live in Scotland and my area our police in do seem to do something about it, there was a lot of pressure from the school and parent council though to get action from them. The police aren't there all the time though.
Bst idiotic parent I saw outside the school was with cars parked up each side of the road. One mum in a 4x4 driving one way and along comes a bus coming from the other direction but not enough room for either vehicle to get past each other. The mum freaked out and refused to reverse meaning the bus driver had to otherwise there would have been a total traffic jam.
  • I avoid cycling down all roads that I know have a school on them at opening and closing times, it's just too dangerous a route to take for a vulnerable road user ie someone not in a 4x4 or say a small child.

I lived about 20 mins walk from my son's primary school -I loved Fridays as it was my day off so the only day we could walk to and from school together -we had some of our best chats whilst doing so. Monday to Thursday I had to drive - simply because I didn't have the time to walk the 20 mins back home to get the car and still get to work on time......or be on time to pick him up. Sometimes it isn't laziness.

One of our local ones has a deal with Tesco to use their carpark - gate through from the supermarket into the school grounds - supermarket get the "just pop in for a pint of milk" factor, school gets the road the school's actually on left relatively congestion-free (apart from the few pillocks who ignore it) and the kids just walk into school from the rear of the school site instead of the front.
