I've had a Samsung NC10 netbook for 4 years and I love it. Use it mainly for internet and e-mail and some simple excel and word docs. No cd/dvd drive but I use usb sticks and external discdrive on the rare occasion I need it.
It's made me lazy - I sit in the armchair in front of the telly and tap on my netbook all evening. I rarely use my desktop nowadays unless for a large doc or when I need to print something. Small screen size doesn't bother me and speed is reasonable.
Bonus is the weight & size when travelling with it.

Me too. I don't understand the complaints about netbooks being slow. Maybe I have a better optimized Win XP and software suit?0 -

Hi
I also have a Samsung NC10. I added 2GB of ram plus it runs Windows 7 and isn't slow. I only use it for when I'm out and about. For general use, I prefer my laptop.Sealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -

Netbook when they were conceived where only ever suppose to have 1GB of RAM though some have more.*
This means lots of netbooks that come with 1GB of RAM running Windows 7 Starter are very slow, as Windows 7 is a resource hungry OS.
To increase the response you need to either:
1. Put a different OS on it like a favour of linux that can cope with those specs unless you have an old copy of XP lying around, or,
2. Increase the RAM to 2GB - which is easier to do on some netbooks than others - and remove the bloatware i.e. change the anti-virus program.
I do have a netbook -Acer Aspire One - but I mostly use it now with ubuntu as it crashes with Windows 7 Starter.
For what I initially brought and used the netbook for it works fine i.e doing stuff via the web such as my accounts. If I want a bigger screen I use to connect it to a TV with a HDMI cable. This does mean if I'm working away I have to carry another cable with me plus an external DVD drive.
However as the OP wants to do word processing and spreadsheets locally on it I would buy a small laptop.
Oh and one of my mates has an Asus netbook and again complains it's too slow running Windows 7 Starter however she doesn't complain that it crashes.

They spoke a language called "Furbish".
They were re-released this year, making them reFurbies, and the language they speak reFurbish.
(OK - it's rubbish, but so is the term "refurbished" in the context of a computer, because the components cannot be rejuvinated, so all it can amount to is a dust & polish.)0 -
