I dont like my stock sms app - i cant see a way to add senders to contacts - even worse is it only gives me a tiny little keyhole at the bottom of a totally empty screen (reserved to display a conversation thats not there yet) is all i have to type my message into

Surely this question was answered, twice, in your other thread?

Does the box not expand if you press on it and then start typing?

Which handset do you have? As the small window becomes a larger window with keyboard , once you are ready to type a new message.
To add the number to contacts touch on the recieved number and then it offers the option to call or save the number to contacts.
Yes there are 3rd party sms apps, and available via google play.
The stock on suits , so I don't see the need to improve, but ymmv.

Huawei G300 android - it on ICS but not sure whether or not sms app is part of the android OS or just an Huawei app

Not on mine - my message just scrolls through a tiny little window (3 max words maybe) at the bottom - to make it worse i like using Google talk/type which leads to long messages, top make it even worse, the rest of the screen is just a huuuuuuuuuuge blank white space (reserved for displaying the conversation)

touching the number does nothing on mine - there is a phone icon and attachment icon thats it

I think i concluded the stock sms app is just pants

It's more likely to be tap&hold, not touch.

HAd a quick look - but the preview screen looks identical to what I have already:

    GmXaDvyAnNjRmiME7btXu28Lmn4dKqcW4of90ldoleaYYrU-lw7eQgO3CctCzdTY4AI=w705

See the tiny keyhole at the bottom to actually type (or in my case talk) a whoooooooooooooole message - above that is reserved for conversation

Tried tapping, holding, dancing anti-clockwise - number does nothing and looks exactly the same as the Go SMS app with the phone icon next to it (and in my case a paperclip for attachments

Menu items bring up options but not to add to contacts

I use Pansi SMS. always have. Its very configurable and has some nice themes, and I don't like conversation modes which you can disable on Pansi.

If I click on the sender at the top of the message it takes me to contacts where I can just click 'add new contact' it copies the number and gives the option to add info and save.

It recognises numbers in the body of texts, if I click on them it takes me to (in my case) my dialler (xPhone Pro) with the number auto added into the dial box ready and two option buttons - one to 'send message to' and one to 'add to contacts'

When composing a text it starts with a small single line but expands as needed and can be touch scrolled within the box. I use Perfect Keyboard Pro with customised settings to max up the keys to use 2/3 the screen as I am a crap screen typer so it all suits me good.

One of the biggest + for me of the G300 was the 4" screen, I am too old school to ever use predictive text or any of that other stuff and on smaller devices spend as much time backspacing as typing the characters I wanted! with my monster keyboard on the 4" screen I am 95% accurate.

When I typed touch, I meant touch n hold, I don't have a G300, but the wildfire is similar, whether double tap touch n hold or an additional icon, the OS allows to save the number from the message.
I fear your conclusion is your opinion, but then you are entitled to that opinion, perhaps on the budget G300 that is the way it works, I have to pop to tesco this morning, so if they have a live one, I will have a quick play to see what the 'fuss' is about :o

I have just 'dug out' the original ICS G300 Messaging app. With a message open on the menu key is an option 'add to people' which takes you to your contacts with 'new contact' at the top. Selecting new contact transfers the number into the new contact, lets you add and save as normal - works fine.

If the number is already in your contacts, the 'add to people' option is removed from the menu automatically in messaging.

It also recognises numbers within texts, a quick press on the number brings up option to call, a long press the option to 'save to people'

Google it seems decided to call contacts 'people' in ICS, presume it fits their social media aspirations more.
