Barclaycard £50 Credit for bad press

  • Closed my Barclaycard today. Lots of sales talk about what a great rate they were offering. No £50 (or any Cash) incentive I'm afraid. Oh well I wasn't using it and closing it should help my credit rating. My top tip is to ring customer services on the 'Overseas' number (take off the 44 and put a 0 instead) as that way you will avoid paying a premium rate for the call!

Well I think I did have a legitimate complaint (or issue) re. the Cashback being capped to £120 for 3 months and their not agreeing the 2% rate should apply (rather than 0.5%) at the point the capped spending was reached if this happens before the three months is up. Not knowing of this £50 trick, I was pleasantly surprised when they offered it to me.

But, as I say, there is a legitimate issue there, because the terms on cashback conflict with the special cashback terms and it is up to Barclaycard to reconcile the difference when an affected customer brings it to their attention.

Just called to genuinely cancel, only stumbled upon this thread as I was looking on the net for a cancellation phone number.

I have only used the card twice in 2 years, the last being last July. Paid in full both times. :)

I explained I just fell out of the habit of using the barclaycard, got the list of benefits and then I continued with my wish to cancel making a point of mentioning I use a different card provider for holidays etc. Bingo £50 credit.

    Thanks

13 years as a Barclaycard customer. Regular user and good management of my repayments. Cancelled today, told them I had a better credit card that gave cashback. All they offered was 0% interest for 6 months and free balance transfer.
Despite her best efforts the advisor realised I was not going to 'bite' and just gave up.
Bit disapointed I was not offered anything better.:(

Just rang Barclaycard after seeing this mentioned in the MSE email. Mentioned that I no longer using the card and that new customers get a better deal on balance transfers. Also that if I close the account I can evaluate who does the best balance transfers at the time I next need one and then go with them. Also mentioned LIBOR and that I wasn't very happy about that.. Was transferred to retentions and explained the same again - but didn't mention LIBOR. He gave me sales pitch, offered better rates on cash purchases etc. I declined saying it's not what I use card for. He asked if my decision was final, I said it was. He put me on hold. Couple of minutes later he came back on and offered me £50 credit to keep my account open in the background until I need it. :T

Bit of a gamble as I have a large amount of credit with other lenders which I will need to balance transfer at some point, and my Barclaycard limit is large. But got £50 which can now go off my debt elsewhere. Thanks MSE and other users here! :money::beer:

Oh, and I used 080002823603 to ring them, not the 0844 811 9111 number. So that didn't cost me anything either! :D

Yes it's just happened to me £50 cash credit to the card and they offered an interest rate reduction on another Cashback card to 12.9%. :rotfl:

Quick update... I just tried to get the £50 back for threatening to close and... no joy, the best the offered me was a % reduction from 17.9% to 9%.

I went all the way to the end hoping they would offer the £50 but it didn't happen.

sometimes you have to just come out with it and ask them for a credit to your account it does work.

    don't ask you don't get.
  • I wanted to close my Barclaycard since I no longer used it. They were very persistent in trying to have me keep the account open. Finally they offered me £20 to keep the account open with no strings. Had a read this post beforehand, I would have held out for £50.
