Rehab

My Brother is a heroin addict and has been for many years, also he has a drink problem which I guess they go hand in hand.

Anyway He has been given a card from a friend of a friend with this website address on it...........

http://www.persuasivehealing.com/inf_06.htm

From what he has gathered it costs a £3000 to be treathed at this place and he would love to go and do this.

He has the money that our mum has stashed away for him and not given hin acces too!!

I was hoping to see if anyone on here has ever heard of this place or even if this website is genuine.
This place could be his last chance as he has tried everything and everywhere else.
Thanks.

Hi, i havent heard of that particular clinic, but it would be worth going to see his GP and getting a list of all Rehab clincs that are known to be respectable and worth paying the money for. If he doesnt want to go to his GP, maybe you can just ask for a list from your surgery.

I would definitely take advice from your GP on this one.

Heroin withdrawal will be absolutely evil, and he will need to be under constant medical supervision for this period, and most likely treated with withdrawal drugs.

The clinic mentioned sounds like more a holistic approach. For something as serious as this, I would definitely go for a medical approach.

I do know that Priory Healthcare https://www.prioryhealthcare.com are recommended by the NHS (and they will accept GP referrals). The Priory seems to be associated just with famous people going into rehab, but they do treat 'normal' people too.

    Best of luck x

    Hi
I work within the homelessness sector and deal with a lot of individuals with substance misuse issues. Be very careful with this sort of therapy since it rarely addresses the issues surrounding the addiction.

I have worked with many addicts who have all been clean whilst in prison, but as soon as they return to their own areas, the trouble starts. The physical addiction ( after a difficult withdrawal) is easy, but the psychological addiction is very difficult to deal with and requires vasts amount of effort.

What is your brother's plan after this clinic? Where will he live, what about his friends and MOST importantly, what will he do when is no longer constantly acquiring money/scoring?

I should of written a little about my brother's background just to outline his past.

He is 38 now and has been addicted since the age of 21, He has been in to several clinics in the last 10 years all refered from his Gp, He has even been into CLOUDS HOUSE which is very similar to the priory and then went onto secondary treatment in a safe house BUT YET AGAIN he is led astray and is very much a people pleaser.
He is currently in treatment as I type this for another 2 week stint but HE KNOWS it wont work very long for him otherwise why would he be wanting to go to this place.

My worry is IF he does go to this place and it doesnt work or he gets kicked out I dont think we would ever see him again, he would be in india and if caught with drugs then you can imagine what would happen to him.
  • Hi there,

Can i ask what area you live in and whether he is commiting crime to fund his drug use (sorry!) if so there are special agencies in every area that can help with referrals into rehab,

also is he working? he could get funding for rehab

it suonds as though he needs to realy think about what his triggers to relapse are and how to avoid dangerous situations once he is clean. recovery is an ongoing thing and needs a lot of planning.

Hi there, No he doesnt steal as he is now on methadone but he also doesnt work as he is signed off due to his addiction. He has never really worked so hence why he can get funded to the smaller clinics. He would never get into anything big like clouds house as he has had too many chances. I think he has it in his mind that going to this place in india gets him away from everyone and everything he knows. From what he has said you go there for a year so I guess thats long enough to get sorted.

I would love to know if anyone has been there and done this sort of thing??
  • the methadone will give him a chance to stabilise and look at his situation. be careful that he is not using detox/rehabs as a 'time out' and is not 100% motivated to take on board all the work they do with you in there. Rehabs can b e very intense and offer counselling and support with all issues, underlying the drug use.

whilst on the methadone can he not begin to look at ways to change his life like restructuring his day? having a drug habit is a career in itself and the day fleis by thinking about, trying to get, and taking drugs and a lot of addicts whho get clean are initially very bored! they can miss the excitment.

maybe some exercise, NA groups where he can get peer support, college course, independent living.

I cant advise on the going to India thing, why does he think that will work? I have known some whose families have s ent them to india to get clean and in one case they spent a long time trying to get back home and in the other case they found the drugs cheaper over there!

if he is getting a script is he not getting one to one keywork?

I really sympathise with you cos having an addicted relative or partner is, as i know, really worrying and scary.
The problem with rehabs are that unless the addict is counselled properly before they go, most addicts are vulnerable when they come out. A lot do see it as a means of escape where they can get 3 meals a day, no worry about bill paying or anything. To succeed they have to be 100% committed for themselves, it's no good them doing it for anyone else.
Good luck in finding him the help he needs and deserves, but i would go nhs rather than private for this kind of addiction:o

  • i agree. i have learned that if someone wants to do it and is at that point where the drugs really cannot take them any lower then it doesnt matter where the help is as long as it is there.

Also where does he go when he has come out of rehabs in the past? as i say it takes a strong minded person to return to their previous environmnet where they are likely to bump into assosciates, ex dealers, and general triggers and leaving rehab can be a lonely experience. sometimes when an ex-dealer sees them they are like 'wow where have you been, we missed you, here have one on the house' type talk which immediatley makes the addict feel part of a crew again and off they go.

has he tried starting anew in a new area, or even for a while so he can put what he learned in rehab into play?

I have to agree with many of the previous comments. If someone is truely ready to break away from the hell of addiction, then the help and support they need is available in the UK, and it is free.
I wish your brother all the luck in the world, but feel that the £3000 would be far better spent on re-building his life once he is clean.
