  • Just had another idea to save money and thought I'd share it with you guys. I've got rid of my car! EEEK! OH took it for an early MOT as it is 11 years old and smeely now, bloke at garage said to just take it home and didn't even finish the MOT or charge him! We sat down and had a chat and wrote down every scenario for when we would use the car and worked out a coping strategy and realised we don't actually NEED it, yes, its nice to have a car each but it is an unneccessary luxury and it costs a fortune really. So, the scrappy is coming to take it away next week, I'll get £80 for it so I'm going to buy a bike! It should save us at least £50 a month on upkeep (even though I own it outright) so guess where the extra is going?! ;)

Every time I read about someone getting rid of their car, it convinces me that I'm definately better off without one. We're lucky in a way because we've never had one so are used to managing without.
We've just had to go to the vets miles away. It cost £14 in a taxi to get there. But if we had a car we'd be paying that much every week just in insurance, never mind petrol, tax, MOT, and buying the car itself. Only problem is the bike I want is about £900!
  • I agree cupid_s it is so much cheaper not to have a car. I have gone even cheaper still and got OH to give my old bike out of the garage a makeover. He has oiled it, checked the brakes, bought me a new basket for the front and I got a new bike chain (Wilkos £5.99) new batteries for the lights and its cost me around £19 so I'm in pocket after I get my money off the scrappy and tax back! yay! I'm a bit wary of going on 2 wheels again but I went to the park with DD1 and had a tootle round and its all come back to me so I'm going to go for it. OH feels bad that I've got a bike while he drives the car but I'm made up! It takes me back to when I was a student and I will probably feel fitter. I'm also made up that it has freed up some more money each month to make overpayments. Plus he can do the shopping! win-win situation!

Hope you guys are getting ready to do your updates, hope we've all cut our balance down a lot :)

Update is due 1st October and I am posting the chart on the 12th October so PM me anytime before then.

    Many thanks

Thought I'd bump this up from page 2, just so there's no excuses for forgetting to PM TallGirl!!:D

  • Update sent via PM, though I'll add it here too for reference - we're down to around £41,300 now, which means that we ought to be a month ahead of our planned MFD (November 2010 instead of December). It also puts us at 48.7% of our goal at the halfway point of the MFi3 challenge (which is about as expected, as we'll be paying off a higher proportion of the capital in the second half).
