Hi, a quick question before my update. I've started doing a bit of stoozing and now have just over £24,000 in my stooze pot offset against my mortgage. Do I include this in my total or not? technically its never going to be paid off the mortgage as it will be paid back but whilst its there its saving around £3/£4 a day in interest (if i've done my sums right)

I've included the stooze pot in my sig for now but now i'm thinking that's cheating... ;) what does everyone else do??

    Cheers
    Ptee

Hi ptee, I too do stoozing but I don't calculate the amount off the mortgage, what I do is use it to keep the interest low (as mine is calculated daily, I have a current account mortgage) The interest I save is then 'mortgage pigged'! You save a lot this way ;)

    Mfi3 no. 88: Balance Jan '06 = £63,000.
    Balance 23.11.09 = £nil. :)
  • Update to follow January 4 or January 7, after payment goes in. Until then, see sig for current status ;)
  • OK, I have had to bite the bullet today - the house is officially freeeeeezing!

I am convinced it is because the lovely wooden polished floor boards which caught our eye when we were viewing the house, have dirty great gaps in between and if you lift a floorboard, all there is is a 3 foot drop and the earth! The cold is whistling up between the boards and of course, the heat is disappearing downwards the same way!

So, as well as putting more clothes on:D I have decided to invest in some underfloor insulation foil to fix to the underside of the rafters under the floor and insulate the radiator pipes under the boards.

Sadly, it will cost nearly £500! So I have had to see how I can fund this - got over £200 back from EON as the account was in credit, plus have £60 left from wedding, £180 cashback and the rest will have to come from my ebay sales this month! I'll be damned if I will take the money from the offset ;) I am hoping the insulation should save a bit on the gas bill too!

So guess what I will doing over the Christmas break?!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Try mixing sawdust with glue and filling in the cracks, then stain. Supposed to be v good.....
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • Yep, I can advocate the sawdust & glue method, also great for fixing broken floorboards if bits break off.

    Thanks Ali and Little Mama.

I did this in my old house which was a 30's semi - good as gold - but its not feasible here as there are heating and electric upgrades needed in the next couple of years, plus the house is very old and has had a tendency to suffer from damp in the past so the rafters need to breathe.

  • Angela,

Now, I don't know if it's related or pure coincidence but we used to have a considerable draft coming through some of our floorboards in our lounge, however, having had Cavity Wall insulation done, we don't seem to suffer this problem the same.....albeit if you are standing above one of the more 'open' boards you are aware of a wee draft.

We're in a 30s detached and since that we've also been able to reduce our thermostat to 18c......although I do like my blanket in the evening.

Good luck with all the upcoming work.

Can you get a grant from some council or energy effeciency group fo insulation like that???

We have the same problem, when the wind stops I think it is actually warmer out of the house than in it!!

  • Just a quick post to wish all MFi3 'ers a fab Christmas and a (very) prosperous New Year. You've all been a great help in keeping my motivation high and I am very excited about the possibilities for paying down even more in 2008.
